I am getting ready for my first rod build and I'm looking for an all purpose rod blank. I know a lot of people suggest a kit but I prefer to pick my own components. I have looked at the Mhx blanks but I was wanting some feedback. The blank will be 6'6 to 7 MH with fast action. If all goes well with this build I will be working on a dedicated shakey head rod. Any input will be appreciated.

I have a medium heavy Rainshadow Immortal popping blank that makes a pretty good all purpose rod imo. For my tastes anyway. Not to slow to throw a jig, not to fast to throw a crankbait. Plenty of power. I throw more treble baits than anything else. A medium heavy fast action blank is to fast and powerful for trebles imo, such as the Mhx blanks. My personal favorite all purpose blanks are pretty much everything made by Phenix. The Ultra, Recon, and M1 blanks are great. What kinda all purpose are you after?

I won't be using it too much for treble hooks. The majority of fishing I do is Texas rigs, flukes, pitching docks, spinners, and buzz baits. I throw a sammy periodically. Shakey head fishing is becoming my go to on the clear lakes in my area.

I would suggest a Rainshadow Revelation. Won't break the bank for your first build but also a great performing blank in my opinion.

My favorite all purpose rod build was a 7' G-Loomis IMX MH with a fast tip.

Their MB843 blank is a good all purpose blank and they are available in different color options. My first was a white blank and I'll be working on a metallic green one in the near future.

As far as the "general purpose" goes, any 843 blank is a good choice.  That's a 7' MH Fast usually.  I have built on most manufacturers 843's and for a first build I would recommend a Rainshadow RX 6.  It is $30 and is unbelievably light and sensitive and you will do something on your first build that you will not like, so don't spend more money.  If you insist on spending more get an RX8 or a MHX MB843.
