Super User 5bass Posted May 1, 2007 Super User Posted May 1, 2007 I've been using the Spot Remover Magnums the last few times out and especially Saturday during my club tournament I lost 4 fish in a row with the Magnums. It was "hookset" then "fish jumps and spits hook". Anybody else having trouble? I really like the Magnums but I am puzzled at why they shake out so easily. Caught 3 with the Magnums today and lost 2 due to the head shake. I switched to a regular jig and the hook-ups were solid and I had no losses after that. I give the Magnums a big 'ol ...... :-? Quote
Super User Hookemdown. Posted May 1, 2007 Super User Posted May 1, 2007 Like any other bait, such as a jig, the extra weight near the eye of the hook makes it easier for the fish to throw. But I don't know why it would worse on a SR than on a jig. I've never tried the magnums, but I'd give the regulars a solid...-3. I just don't like the things Quote
Super User 5bass Posted May 1, 2007 Author Super User Posted May 1, 2007 dodgeguy, I have some similar to those but they are totally different than the spot removers. The hookerz shakey heads dont give you the stand-up presentation as the Spot Remover does......they are totally different heads and I'm not using little shakey worms with the SR's. In my opinion, the Spot Removers need a wide gap hook as an option, especially when using thicker baits (beavers, brush hogs and other creature baits) Quote
Randall Posted May 1, 2007 Posted May 1, 2007 I know I have said this before but I cringe everytime I see one of those jigheads on a rod. I just see it as a lost fish or missed hookset waiting to happen. Regular ball head like a Shakey Head or Spotsticker with no spring keeper will hook and land more fish. If you need a stand up head with a good size hook try a Spot Stalker jighead at www.unclejosh.com. Quote
Super User .ghoti. Posted May 1, 2007 Super User Posted May 1, 2007 I also tossed the spot remover jigs I bought. Couldn't keep a fish buttoned up on them. I really like Tru_Tungsten's Ikey Head jigs. Both the Weed Wacker and the Ike's Spike are fine jigheads. A little pricey, but once the fish is on, it ain't comin' off. Cheers, GK Quote
stratosdriver Posted May 1, 2007 Posted May 1, 2007 i agree with aint texan the fintech line of jigs are the best i have ever fished with and if you havent tried them yet your missing out.The title shot is amazing stand up jig and very hard to get snaged not to mention they use Mustad ultra points so give them a try you wont be disapointed Quote
Fedxpress Posted May 2, 2007 Posted May 2, 2007 I like #.0 Gamakatsu Hook 1/8 once ball jigs and screw lock. Fedxpress Quote
Super User 5bass Posted May 2, 2007 Author Super User Posted May 2, 2007 I like the looks of the FinTechs and the Nuckle Balls. I like the full open gap on the nuckleball. I'll give them a try and hope in the meantime that Buckeye starts making a wide gap spot remover magnum. Thanks for the links. Quote
Super User burleytog Posted May 2, 2007 Super User Posted May 2, 2007 5BL, try the Bagley shakey head jig. No spring or keeper, but the worm stays on quite well. Quote
flyphisher # Posted May 2, 2007 Posted May 2, 2007 Use a heavier rod and line and cross there eyes good.......or go to heavier line and a rod with a little softer tip and dont let them jump. I have fished both jigheads alot. The spotremovers without the spring seem to work better to me. Some days the fish just wont bite a SR in a way to really get them hooked, noticed that quick when it was all that was working. Quote
Super User .ghoti. Posted May 2, 2007 Super User Posted May 2, 2007 Aint Texan, thanks for the link. I like the look of those jigs. They'll be the next ones I try, Cheers, GK Quote
Cephkiller Posted May 3, 2007 Posted May 3, 2007 5BL, try the Bagley shakey head jig. No spring or keeper, but the worm stays on quite well. +1 I've never lost a fish with these. Quote
bighed Posted May 3, 2007 Posted May 3, 2007 I've been fishing the Spot Remover quite a bit this year and have not had the thrown hook issues. I'm fishing them with very thin roboworms and Yamamotos which may well be the difference. My biggest problem with them is breaking them off on 8lb flouro at a buck each. I've probably gone through six boxes in the last three months. :'( Quote
Super User Gatorbassman Posted May 3, 2007 Super User Posted May 3, 2007 I don't understand why you guys are haveing lost fish issues. I have been fishing with Spot Removers for more than two years now and I have boated hundreds of fish on them. I can't think of one time where the fish came off during the fight. I guess I'm that much better than you. Quote
Super User 5bass Posted May 3, 2007 Author Super User Posted May 3, 2007 I dont have a problem with the lighter weight SR's.....it's the Magnums that are giving me trouble. It could be the heavier head causing the problem. Quote
sodaksker Posted May 3, 2007 Posted May 3, 2007 I too have lost at least 15 fish on the 1/4 SR. I thought it was just me or the way I was rigging my bait. Maybe there is something else to it :-/ I have also tried the screwed up jig, and had a nice size drum straighten out my hook. That nuckelball looks interesting....Here we go again : Quote
cullin8s Posted May 4, 2007 Posted May 4, 2007 I would think that the actual jighead has nothing to do with your problem. I would look at how limber or stiff your rod is, what size line your using and how loose your drag is. Since its just the heavy spot remover that your having problems with my guess would be that somewhere down the line something is not beefy enough to get the larger hook of the magnum into the fish good. Super User 5bass Posted May 4, 2007 Author Super User Posted May 4, 2007 I dont know, a few of the fish shook loose after being hit with my Helium XH Flippin rod.....within 15-20 ft of the boat. Quote
Banor Posted May 4, 2007 Posted May 4, 2007 I've used everything from the 1/8 oz to the magnums and not lost a fish on them. My last tournament the spot remover was the pattern for 90% of my fish too. B Quote
spotaholic Posted May 6, 2007 Posted May 6, 2007 Can I sound in on this one being that I have this bait on ALL the time and have spent alot of R&D time with this bait and the guy's from Buckeye. The regular spot remover should be used in 99% of fishing application. Designed for line 6-10lb test with a med action rod. This is not for use in heavy cover. The thin wire hook is designed to go through the worm and into the fish with very little effort.LIke fluke said a fast upward jerk is all that is needed with this bait. The mag which I only fish in really thick brush is designed for heavier no stretch line where you need to pull the fish out of the cover quick. Heavy rod and line is the key to the mags. Different baits for differnt applications. If you are using the pro model with the screw keeper I would recomend cutting the screw down to two turns that really helped with the hookset and still keeps the bait on. When I recieved the prototypes of this bait I was loosing all kinds of fish and made that one adjustment and it made a world of difference. IMO Quote
hi_steel_basser Posted May 8, 2007 Posted May 8, 2007 I have never had a problem like yall are describing. I have caught hundreds of fish on a spot remover jig, the only fish I miss are those that shortstrike and those that break the 8-10 lb test I use. Quote
mike bat Posted May 8, 2007 Posted May 8, 2007 i dont fish these shakey heads at all ..... alto i do have a friend that does rather well with them ..... he swears by not using any kind of snap hook set ,,, he says just reel fast and let the rod load and set .... he said at first he used the snap set but lost a ton of fish ,,, so now he just lets the rod set the hook Quote
mike bat Posted May 9, 2007 Posted May 9, 2007 the one he uses says spot remover on it ..... its flat on the bottom so it stands the bait up ..... i believe he uses a small robo worm ..... im not sure but he has been playing with this spot remover for a while .... he hooks the worm with the hook point buried so its semi weedless ..... ive seem him hook more then a few ..... when he feels them take the worm he just reels like crazy ane raised the rod up .... not a snap set more like a reel tug set ..... i geuss lol ;D Quote
mike bat Posted May 11, 2007 Posted May 11, 2007 well i was just telling you guys what i saw him do ..... at first he had trouble too ,,, i saw him struggle alot early last season but by fall he had it down ..... well for the most part lol ..... i will tell you its just like a dropshot hook set ///// now that you mention it ....he said that the hook is finer then the pig and jig hook so a constant preasue is better than a snap set ,,,, this is the reason i havent tryed the spot remover or other shakey heads ..... when i feel a tug i tend to snap set ,,,, my badd lol ..... im a sucker for the jig and pig i love a good hard hook set ..... well i geuss try it ,,, may work for some ,,, or may not ..... do what works best for you .... but let me know if it works .....
