Concept C As Bfs, And Light Casting Rods

Looking to replicate the action of my spinning setup, which is a 1st gen Crucial drop-shot rod rated to 3/8, paired with a 1000 sized reel. Would a *** fit the bill? Not looking to cast anything under 1/4 oz. 

 

As for rods...The Phenix Maxim Med Lt. seems to come highly recommended on this board (and will match purtily with the ***); however, it's listed as "mod fast." What other sub $250 rods would you guys suggest to throw 1/4 - 3/8 oz, with a fast/xf action? The new Zodias BFS 2 pc is listed as xf, and I read that the Corzza is coming to town as well.

Any of the Phenix medium light rods will work. If you don't like your rods a little on the slow side best look elsewhere. The Bfs Corzza will be a bit faster than the basic medium light Corzza series in case you were curious. As for the *** I can't help, but I can't imagine it not being able to handle a quarter ounce. If you plan on casting lighter weight the Daiwa Alphas SV or new SV 105 is outstanding for versatility.

the Daiwa zillion 6-6 and 7' medium jig rods are rated 1/8-5/8 and are extra fast, which is what rules them out for me.

1/4oz isn't bfs to me, or a lot of others. So any medium and even a lot of medium heavy rods would have no problem casting that weight. 1/8oz under is where I consider bfs. You're saying that you plan to throw 1/4-3/8oz baits which is generally a med or mh rod. The ml would be ok for 1/4 but 3/8oz it might not be enough. Thats just my .02 though.

1/8oz weight with trick worm - medium

3/16oz weight with rage craw - mh

I have a Recon 2 713 ml that I use as my bfs rod. It's rated as a fast action but it's more of a mod fast. Hasn't been an issue though. It helps to load the rod. I've never owned another ml casting rod so I can't compare to others. I feel that it's a tad more powerful though. Since I rarely venture into the 1/8oz range it works well. I throw ned rigs,1.0 square bills,3" wacky senkos, and 1/16oz jig head with a trick worm.

I understand what you are saying in regards to weight and two weeks ago I would have partially agreed with you but the Japanese invented BFS and their BFS rod ratings do not mirror our across the pond definition of what BFS is. The Megabass F2-60X Cliffhanger is a BFS rod that is rated to 1/2oz and there is a video on YouTube of Yuki Ito using this rod with a finesse jig and after he catches a bass he says 'Bait Finesse'. Shimano's BFS rod ratings are to 3/8oz as far as I can tell.

right, well a spinbait is considered a finesse bait, but the lightest one of those is 9 grams. I'm trying to get away from my spinning rod altogether.

Not trying to talk smack but 9 grams is extremely heavy compared to what I have been throwing lately. It's not hard to get away from spinning but in some cases, it can be costly.

Oh, me too. I'm just saying that finesse baits aren't necessarily light. I've got a reel set up to cast down to an eighth and it does it really well. That's around the weight of a Crosstail Shad on a #2 hook, which is the lightest I'd ever use. You're right, it wasn't cheap, but it's worth it. Come trout season, I'll still be out there with my UL rod and 500 size spinning reel, though, throwing single salmon eggs on a #10 hook, though. I don't think there's any escaping that. Catching anything on a setup like that is a total blast.
