Treble Hook Replacement Question

I recently acquired several jerkbaits. They are used and I would like to replace all of the treble hooks. Is there one hook that I can use for a variety of different lures from different manufacturers? I want something affordable and preferably black nickel. What size would i look for? They are mostly smithwick, lucky craft and owner baits. I would like to buy one pack of hooks that would work for every lure if possible. From what I have read I think round bend hooks would work the best. Thanks for any advice.

If all 3 brands of jerkbaits have the same size trebles then yes you can buy a couple packs and swap them out. If they aren't then you'll need to get different sizes. A quality affordable treble is the mustad triple grip. You can find hooks sizes on the manufacturers website and also TW usually will list them. Using different hooks can sometimes add weight and will affect the sink rate of your lure. It's an easy way to turn a slow rising jerkbait into a suspending jerkbait.

Eagle Claw offers a quality treble, Lazer Sharp, that is an affordable option. I believe it's their 3X. I know it comes in red, but I'm not sure about nickle.  #4  should cover most of those baits.

gamakatsu's are always good but probably more expensive than Mustad or Eagle Claw. VMC makes good hooks.

probably size 6. Owner st-36 are excellent hooks.

I like Owner St 36's, especially for baits like jerkbaits where they'll often just swat at them. #6 or #4 will most likely be all you need for jerkbaits.

For suspending jerkbaits I use a variety or different hooks because adding or subtracting weight will really affect a suspending bait. That said, the two I use most often is the VMC 8540 and the Owner ST-36 stinger. For crankbaits, I'm with Papajoe222, Eagle Claw Lazer Sharp 374T, they are 2X strong and wicked sharp!!! The thing with those hooks are the weight, too heavy for jerkbaits but for my river grinders, the Lazer Sharp hooks get the nod!!! I use the Lazer Sharp hooks on my river square bills because the extreme rocky substrate is tough on hooks and these take a pounding and not only do they stay sharp but they hook fish extremely well, they are the same hook used on the Manns 1 minus series as well as the Baby X and a few others.

I prefer short shank, I use eagle claw both 3x and 4x.

Unless they're rusty or obviously damaged, I'd take a hook file to them. Maybe just replace the worst of the bunch. If they're in bad shape, I guess I'd replace them. But I understand you don't want to pay more than the lures cost to replace hooks.

Smalljaw is right, you can turn a suspending jerkbait into a sinker or floater in a second if you put the wrong size/weight hooks on there (may be a good thing sometimes).  Going to have to try me some of the Lazer Sharps when i go through the extra trebles i already have laying around.  

Also agree with rippin that the mustad triple grips are good hooks and rather affordable.

I use Mustad and VMC round bend trebels. They are inexpensive .

Thank you for all of the advice. It looks like I will just do some research and attempt to match the hooks with what the manufacturer originally used. I didnt even think about changing the lures floating capabilities. I love the new eagle claw lazer hooks for making my own jigs, so I will be giving their treble hooks a strong look.

The first thing you need is a jeweler's scale. (either that, or a bucket of water and a lot of time).

The jerk baits you mentioned all have different size hooks that range from size 4 to size 6, your replacements should be the same size. VMC makes excellent replacement treble hooks for jerk baits and Rapala minnows and I believe they have a chart available to help you select the proper sizes.
