Balshy Fishing Posted August 17, 2015 Posted August 17, 2015 MY RODS 6'6 MF with 10# Sufix Elite Monofilament 6'6 M with 15# Moss Green Spectra PowerPro Braid to a 12# Seaguar Fluorocarbon 6'6 MH with 30# Hi-Vis Yellow PowerPro Braid to a 12# Seaguar Fluorocarbon So, I was on my way home from a big lake today and stopped by this smaller lake. How would you guys fish this/lakes with similar type stuff on the top? Also, if I see this on a large body of water; is it a good idea to fish it? There was no defined bottom, it was all hydrilla/milfoil. Still having trouble telling the difference! Quote
Super User MIbassyaker Posted August 18, 2015 Super User Posted August 18, 2015 Anything plastic, weedless. Toad, stick worm, trick worm, ribbontail worm, craw, beaver, creature, whatever. If you want something specific: Rage toad or Rage Shad, weedless on a 1/8 or 1/4oz weighted hook. Use the MH rod and tie directly to your 30lb braid with a double palomar knot. Cast, buzz it across the top of the slop, past and over the edges. Quote
Jtrout Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 I have a pond near me that gets like that I threw a weightless 4 in Yamamoto senko on a 2/0 hook and drag it on top and they would hammer it! Maybe give it a whirl 1 Quote
ThatZX14Fella Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 I'd have to say a frog. I hate fishing frogs because I can't get the technique down and I never get bites, but that's too weedy for me to mess with. Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted August 18, 2015 Super User Posted August 18, 2015 Frog, Weightless Fluke, Weightless Senko, pitch jigs, Texas Rigged Trick worms, and if you can punch it. Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted August 18, 2015 Super User Posted August 18, 2015 I would also use a weedless hook, wacky rig a senko or worm. Quote
FinCulture Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 I wouldn't go weightless on a plastic here around those pads. Maybe throw a big weight on one and punch into the pads. either that or a hollow body. Quote

Drag it across the top and/or let it fall in pockets. Caught many fish this way! Zoom Trick Worms and Stick baits too! 1 Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted August 18, 2015 Super User Posted August 18, 2015 That tree screams fish me too. Quote
Fun4Me Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 I would try working the top first with a frog, lizard, or fluke. depending on time of day, or if the sky was overcast, I'd throw a spook Jr, or popper of some kind, in those open pockets of water. If I didn't get anything productive out of that, I would Texas rig, wacky rig weedless, splitshot, or even throw a Texas rigged weighted frog jig underneath that cover. That pond looks a lot like the pond that I caught the fish in my avatar. A frog was working for bites but they weren't gulping it. i switched to a Spook Jr. in the open water pockets that netted me 5 fish in about 15 minutes, only 1 of them was a dink. TLDR; I would find out what they wanted, and give it to them. Quote
Super User Senko lover Posted August 18, 2015 Super User Posted August 18, 2015 I fish a pond similar to that with a little less junk on the water. Any exposed hooks immediately get a long strand of distusting vegetation....I fish flukes, t-rigged worms and craws, grandebass rattlesnakes, swimbaits, and of course frogs. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted August 18, 2015 Super User Posted August 18, 2015 First thing I would do is find out if I could fish there or not. Then I would throw a frog or a weightless t-rig on the far side. Looks like an island off of that far bank. Quote
Racerx Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 Johnson Silver Minnow spoon will cruise through that vegetation just fine. Quote
*Hank Posted August 20, 2015 Posted August 20, 2015 That`s some really great looking cover! T-rigged soft plastics and frogs would be perfect. Quote

Lizards have always only been a spring time thing for me) through the slop and over any hard cover. Don't be afraid to drag weedless plastics and jigs over stumps - you may get crushed as soon as it hits splashes back to the water). Hit those pockets and edges with topwater. I've gotten monsters (by PA Standards, anyhow) fishing the same type of ponds. If you've never seen a big largemouth blow up a frog, prop bait, or buzz bait through duckweed, it's incredible. Quote

Yes, this guy is right on with rage shad. drag in on the slop like a frog and when you hit open water start reeling and you got yourself a soft buzzbait. The fish in my avatar was caught on one in a swamp hole exactly like this. Quote
