This past winter I bought a 7'3 Veritas off Ebay to use for fishing frogs. It is the first expensive rod I have bought. On a fishing trip this past weekend I went out fishing in a canoe. The lure that was on the rod was hanging out of the canoe and caught on a weed while we were moving slowly. I didn't notice until the rod snapped! I don't think there was really that much pressure on the rod because we weren't moving fast and usually in a canoe I notice small amounts of resistance. Here is a picture of how it broke. Any suggestions? I know it was off Ebay but is there anything I can do? Thanks for any help.

d**n that really sucks. Sorry to see that man. Did you buy it new?

Very sorry to hear about this but I can relate! I've broken many a rod over the years, all due to "operator error". I am now very careful with my gear and do my best to watch out for any potential danger zones.

That said, I've learned to not become so attached to my gear because material things can be replaced. Chalk it up to one of life's many learning experiences. You can try to see what Abu will do for a replacement but if you are an honest person you'll own up to the fact the rod was broken from inadvertent abuse/neglect (don't mean to sound harsh but them's the best terms I could think of). Buy one of the rod sleeves and lure wraps and use the hook keepers when possible. Small price to pay for avoiding future snags. GL

bummer. Rods are fragile, though, and it doesn't take much pressure in the wrong direction to do that, especially with extra fast blanks. I see guys high sticking their rods on fish or snags, practically trying to double it over. It doesn't help fight the fish or free the lure, but it will snap your favorite high dollar rod like a pencil. Live and learn, brother.

Contact Abu/Pure fishing. They'll send you a replacement. It'll even be the new 2.0 version. All you'll have to do is take some pics and fill out a warranty claim online. Should run you $20. I did a warranty claim on one for a friend. It fell over as he was walking out the door and you can figure out the rest. The process was simple and they have great customer service. I told them the truth about what happened. Give them a call.

It's pretty strange it's in 3 pieces from the lure getting snagged on something though.

I bought it new off Ebay, I also thought it was very strange that it broke in 2 places. Wierd.

maybe it was because of the angle that the rod was in against the edge of the canoe. I wasn't holding it at the time.

Send it back to the manufacturer. Tell them u bought it online. Companies want to hear field reports about there products so they can improve them. I spent 21 years in a r&d test lab for Otis elevator world headquarters engineering. We investigated product failures. Besides new product development. Let us know how u make out. Send it back.

Fact;

I purchased older new stock quantum baitcaster reels. Both were broken inside. Must of been counter demos. Quantum sent me the parts to repair both reels. One was way out dated a bill dance version. She knew what parts from a newer reel that fit it. That's for the outstanding service from Quantum. I told her I bought them new on online

When a manufacturer goes out of there way to fix there product when they could say it's not there fault they made a customer. I even offered to pay.

I purchased a expensive fly rod and reel from Kittery trading post in Maine. The first time ever using it with success on panfishing till dark I put the window up on the rod and cut the tip off. It was a $250 setup for $125. Ouch my loss.

From when I was 16yo I broke a fishing rod per year till my mid twenties. I'm careless. Now I pay more attention.

You could just man up and say hey, I screwed up and it's totally my fault and not expect Abu to replace it.

I don't think it could crack that easy.

If the rod was pointing toward the front of the canoe, most likely broke from "high sticking."  Like any hi mod rod would do.  If it were pointing toward the back of the canoe, it would be impossible to break it.  No  rod will break when pointed at the source of the resistance.

The weight of the canoe broke it.  Looks like it exploded, which means it was realy stressed.  I would not expect a replacement from Abu.  It was user error.  Having your reel drag set correctly might have saved it.

Companies replacing rods, no questions asked, is one reason original costs are so high.

how did they ship this thing? Are rigid cardboard tube or a flimsy cardboard box? It may have been fractured in transit and you never knew because you fished it right. That might explain the two breaks.

Sounds like you just messed up. You weren't paying attention, and you probably just high- sticked it. No big deal dude, man up, take the 50$ loss, and buy a more durable rod from a reputable dealer.

Not trying to be rude but rods dont break like that under are normal and even most bad situations. In my opinion what ever happened to that rod was done under extreme pressure. I have seen 1 other break like that and the driver was passing a dock with the tip poking out of the bow. The tip hit dead center of the piling and the butt was tight to the console. The rod was not allowed to bend at all and it exploded basically due to the compound pressure. Most have been in that bad situation where you go in to free a bait and tide or wind does not work with you and you end up snapping a tip section off but blowing it up like that takes a real bad situation.

Right on the money man. It's pretty hard to break a rod in 3 pieces unless it hangs out of your truck door and you smash it lol

In June I broke three rods.  All on hooksets.  Two went into 3 pieces & one went into four. And it was't very hard to do at all.  All were under warranty which was honored fully by St Croix.

Completely different situation man. His rod was on the edge of the canoe, and the leverage of the heavy canoe probably shattered it.

X2  on the contacting Abu about getting a replacement.  Last Summer I caught a Veritas in my tailgate and broke it.  The nice folks at Abu sold me the exact one at their cost, or there-about.  Sure beat shelling out another hundred bucks.

Best of luck with it...

Abu Garcia has an outstanding customer service , they really back up their products , that said , i've said it before and i'll say it again , going with companies like Abu Garcia , St. Croix , Phenix , Lew's, etc... are such a pleasure to deal with , making me feel confident that when i invest hundreds of dollars in gear , i will be taken care of when i need their customer service ....

Bingo. I remember a similar situation years ago. My first "good" Rod was a st. Croix Premier.... That my dad caught in the tailgate/back window, snapping it right at the tip guide. I was furious.

Luckily, the local tackle shop were rockstar sat repairing rods and it was good as new the next day.

One of the reasons I've been a big fan of St. Croix, Shimano, and Abu is that they provide support for when things go bad, and also seem to care about earning your business on your next purchase. Also, I really miss that tackle shop for the same reasons.

Most likely the case.

Rods usually don't break, people break them.  Don't ever remember a broken rod landing any fish of any size.
