Phenix M1 Smx-73Mh For Swimbaits

I'm curious if the above rod would work as a short swim bait rod. Its rated 2-6oz but it has a fast taper and that's what I'm worried about. I'm new to swim baiting and don't currently have a dedicated setup. The reason I'm looking at this rod is that I can get it local for a good price. I don't want to purchase it if it isn't going to fit the bill. I'm planning on throwing 6" hudds and stuff under 5oz. Any help greatly appreciated

that's a pretty short rod for throwing 4-5 oz. baits , gonna wear you out after awhile , i would look at the M1 8' swimbait rod or a Ultra 7'11'' or 8' swimbait rod , i would get a rod with alure range of 2-8 oz. so as not to overload the rod , you want a longer rod to aid in casting the bait , like a catapult , a 7'3'' rod is not the ticket . my swimbait rods are 8'6'' and 9 ' .

some people like moderate fast tapers for their swimbait rods , i'm not one of them , i like a fast tip and a LOT of backbone in my swimbait rods . once i hook into a fish i power reel it to the surface and surf it to me , avoiding thrown baits . also take into account that not every manufactures rating of fast, extra fast , moderate , moderate fast are the same . being that the rod you are interested in is a medium heavy power might make it not so fast of action with a bait towards the higher end of the lure rating .

Start with the Phenix M1 Swimbait rod in a MH for things like 6" Hudds. Work's for me. Also a very good rod for flipping.

I have a 7'3 Swimbait rod and getting another 7'6 and 7'9. 

 

7'3 is plenty long enough for a 5-6 inch bait. I just picked up a 7'3H to throw smaller glide baits in the 5-6 inch size

 

I like the smaller single hooked baits on my 7'3 H Airrus Swimbait ( Hudd and Hudd 68, Osprey TT 6 inch) It's rated up to 3 oz and handles them just fine.

 

On the longer rods I throw the hardbaits like rats, snakes, larger 7 inch Ospreys and 7'6 does the trick fine.

 

7'9 is fine too. I plan on throwing the DEPS 175 and similar baits on the 7'9.

 

  I don't throw any 4 oz baits or heavier so an 8 foot or longer rod for my purposes is too much.

I have some s-waver 168's and savage gear swimbaits

under two ounce and I'm not sure if I'll get anywhere close

to 5 or 6 oz. This is for swim baiting ponds and small lakes were

casting distance is limited. Thanks for the help, this forum is very

helpful.

Okuma Guide Special "A" series heavy is a good choice at $125. This rod is 7'11", ideal for most swimbait presentations, light weight and doesn't compromise on anything.
