Ned Riggin'

So, I'll take the bait and try this pitiful looking setup. Does anyone have any tips as to how to fish it properly? I'll be honest, I've read a lot about it, but am a little skeptical. My friend and I are fishing a lake in CT that can be tough this time of year. We were wondering what you all thought about it to entice some slow biting fish. Thanks!

I don't understand why so many are still skeptical after all the proven reports on here. If 99 out of 100 people say the sky is blue, I'm going with that.

better to fish it and see what happens than to not and wonder for the rest of your life what would have happened if you did.

I think after so many decades of plastics that wiggle or flap on the retrive, there's a suspicion that if a bait doesn't do that it won't catch fish.

 

The Ned Rig reminds me of nothing so much as the old Berkley studies with craw baits that showed bass would make the most strikes to plastic craw bodies when all the claws, legs, and other appendages were removed. IIRC, they didn't think anglers would buy something like that, so they didn't produce one for sale.

Probably because someone with 15# line on a heavy action bait caster told them it didn't work.

Yes, and the Ned Rig basically goes against everything most bass anglers are taught is the "right" way to fish so they dismiss it without ever trying it, I'm fine with that though.

The best part about the ned rig is you dont have to "entice" the fish literally the less you do the better. Im new to using it this year and ive caught hundreds of fish on this thing by far my most productive retrieve is let it sink, reel twice, wait, repeat. its so simple its almost hilarious. use bright line and pay attention so you dont end up gut-hooking every fish other than that its pretty hard to screw it up. Also it will skip like halfway across a lake so lately ive been using it a lot to skip up under over hanging trees or docks and its worked surprisingly well for me.

I'm not going to say it won't work but I normally use a thin 10# braid with a leader and a ML spinning rod.

I normally use a 1-16 oz head on a notoriously windy lake and the thinner diameter line the better IMHO.

It does work for me sometimes, but I did struggle to use it on the lake. When the wind was down, it worked great when fished around vertical structure like bullrushes. As soon as the wind came up though it was unusable because the line/lure would get pushed all over the place not allowing the lure to fall where I needed it to because of the light jig head. Trying a heavier jig head kept the lure where I wanted it, but didn't catch fish. Works pretty good on the river, but wouldn't say the bait is magic, catches fish, yes, better than other baits sometimes.

One of the bass fishing books I have has the results of that study and I remember being amazed to see that the craw with no legs, claws or antennae out-fished the other crawfish imitations, and by a good margin.  

 

And I'm still probably the only guy on the planet who hasn't tried the Ned Rig.  BUT... the heads and worms came in yesterday, so I'm ready to try it!

I like it all right, but it has been something of a challenge. First, I got no name jig heads because everyone was out of good ones for a while. Straightened out the hook on a monster the first time out. The right heads fixed that problem, but not the others; I hate that you have to glue the worm to the heads; and the open hooks very trying on a lot of waters.

 I use the shroomz jig heads and i have never once glued the worm on or ever had a problem with them coming off.
