Dye99 Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 I've had one in my tackle box on my kayak for ever....Cant remember last time I used it. Decided tonight to start my evening session off with one tied on. Did 6 fish in an hour, one of the 2.5 pounds... I forgot how much fun top water is I guess. Anyone have luck with the WP? Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted August 12, 2015 Global Moderator Posted August 12, 2015 It has a bit of a cult following around here. Big bass in our end of the year tournament last year was caught on one. Quote
Super User Senko lover Posted August 12, 2015 Super User Posted August 12, 2015 I really want to try it after watching Bamabass's video..... Quote
a1712 Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 Nothing quite like a topwater blow up. These 2 fish were caught on Whopper Ploppers within 10 minutes of each other. Brian. 2 Quote
CTGalloway21 Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 only thing that sucks with the 90 is majority of the time they are hooked in the front hook and the back hook is all up in their gills. And I also have missing a lot of fish lately after hookup on the back hook. Gonna swap out the back hook to something stickier and see if it helps. Anyone know what brand hooks R2S runs with? Quote

I bought one and tried it but never caught a fish on it. To be fair I never fished it at night or when the top water bite was really hot so my odds were probably just as good with it as any other noisy top water. It's a cool bait for sure. I might buy another one to put in my creature feature box...lol ..snakes,eels, birds, rats, mice,...... whopper plopper Quote
Super User WRB Posted August 12, 2015 Super User Posted August 12, 2015 I first looked at this thinking Whopper Stopper vintage lures like Hell Bender deep diver. The R2Sea Whooper Plopper is a take off of another vintage lure; Roberts Mud Puppy. Interesting proven design, should perform OK when a straight retrieve like a buzz bait is working. Tom Quote
FrogFreak Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 I just started fishing the 90 a couple weeks ago and it's a blast! It is weird how most of my hook ups have been on the front treble. I have been thinking about simply taking the rear treble off of the lure. I run it like a buzz bait and sometimes do quick jerks like a crazy horse. Both ways have worked. Quote
desmobob Posted August 13, 2015 Posted August 13, 2015 I've come close to ordering one a few times. I think the thing that holds me back is the thought of closing up my tackle box at the end of the night, knowing I just laid down a whopper plopper inside it.... Maybe a name change would be helpful! Tight lines, Bob 1 Quote

massrob Posted August 13, 2015 Posted August 13, 2015 This is my favorite top water bait. There's something about the sound of it that drives fish crazy. Anyone that hasn't tried one should. It's extremely easy to fish and it straight up catches fish. I threw one right after ice out this year and fish were attacking it. I swear it works during non-traditional topwater times. I've caught them every hour of the day on it. Just my experience maybe it doesn't work for others but it does for me. Quote

I've never tried one but I'm feeling more and more like I should. I love topwater and fish a lot of places I think one would be really good for. I always passed it off as gimmicky and more than a little "helicopter-y" but I think the design has a lot of merits now that I'm watching more videos of how it works. Quote

It's a cool bait and does have a unique sound to other top waters I've fished. It probably does work well most all of the time but I swear there's every other lake in the country and then there's Smith Mountain...LOL. Fish at Smith seem to like plankton more than anything else..ha! For me that is... Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted August 13, 2015 Global Moderator Posted August 13, 2015 Ok Ordered one... Other than a straight retrieve, how else do you guys fish it? Mike Quote
Dye99 Posted August 13, 2015 Author Posted August 13, 2015 I just straight retrieve, pop it with pauses and a few times I just throw it, then let it sit for a few minutes and it was getting hit... Im going to see if it was a fluke tomorrow after work at a different lake... Quote
Super User gulfcaptain Posted August 13, 2015 Super User Posted August 13, 2015 The 90 catches fish, but be warned it will twist the crap out of your line. I've since put small quality swivels to keep this from happening. The 130 doesn't have that problem. Have caught fish on both sizes, but prefer to throw the 130 over the 90 when I can. Quote
The Guy Posted August 14, 2015 Posted August 14, 2015 I caught three night fishing during the last full moon. It was the black larger one, using a straight retrieve. Quote
dam0007 Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 Put maybe 300 casts in past year on mine while top water bite was on and..... Nothing. Quote

Dye99 Posted October 22, 2015 Author Posted October 22, 2015 Yea my topwater bite with the whopper didn't last that long...Fun while it lasted though! Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted October 23, 2015 Global Moderator Posted October 23, 2015 Had some of the most aggressive smallmouth explosions ever on the 130 Plopper today, video to follow. Quote
gobig Posted October 23, 2015 Posted October 23, 2015 It is a cool bait as mentioned. I use a swivel on mine also. The line twist can ruin new line in one day. Especially as you start to fish it around weeds. Quote

PAGreg Posted October 26, 2015 Posted October 26, 2015 Just got to try out a 90 size yesterday for the first time and even with a water temp of 46º, had a smallie explode on the thing and inhale it. I have a box full of topwaters that I love, but I have a strong feeling I will be tieing on a whopper plopper quite often from now on. Quote
