I have a tdz 103 in fair shape with some upgrades and was thinking of selling it for an alpha sv. I use tdz on a 6'6" mh rod for multiple techniques. I want to throw small poppers, small jerkbaits, and larger spinbaits with the alpha sv. The tdz can handle the duty but I feel that it may be time to replace it with a fresh new reel. The tdz can be finicky with spool tension and brakes making it difficult to set up for skipping.

Is this a fair upgrade or is the bait monkey on my back for no reason?

I personally will never sell any of my TD-Z's and will buy them before I buy any new reel on the market today (new sv zillion aside). With the 7:1 gear ratio up grade available, there isn't an application they can't handle /w the 100m or r+ spool. With that said....I get it....new shiny reels are hard to pass up and the alphas sv has quite the following. Make a note that if you do sell the TDZ and regret it, they are probably going to be harder to come by /w the new SV spools coming out for the zillion and the 100m being discontinued.

long story short, keep it and buy an alphas.

What makes the Alphas so great is the SV spool. So as Cgrinder said, just buy an SV spool. It'll be a whole new reel.

Outside the whole finicky spool tension and brakes.

What's the weight on the sv anyway? My tdz+6'6" steez is less than 10 oz.

Another point. If I buy sv spool and keep tdz I'm out roughly $100. If I sell TDZ and buy jdm alpha I'm out $50-$60.

You're also out a TD-Z that is only going to get harder and more expensive to replace should you come to regret your decision. The SV spools are readily available, either in north America or straight from Japan so why not. Keeping an eye on the forums for used ones can also help control costs.

I have to agree with others on keeping the tdz and getting an sv spool.  You might save a few bucks but your giving up something that is getting harder to find because they aren't producing anymore.  The alphas sv will be readily available for a very long time.  Don't get me wrong because I love my alphas sv, but I'd never sell my tdz r+.  The tdz is a classic and if you upgraded to an sv spool it would be more refined than the alphas sv.  Save up and I'll bet you'll be able to find a used alphas sv as time goes by.

So if I go spool, should I go 103 or 105. Lightest I'll be going is 1/4. Probably smallest being gfix spinbait and probably 10lb test

Posted

Yep. SV 1000 deep. Especially if using 10 lb test and lightest baits will be a quarter ounce. If wanting to use lighter line and baits I'd personally recommend the Alphas SV.

SV 1000 deep is the way to go for + 1/4 oz. You won't regret the decision.

What's difference between deep and shallow 1000 other than the obvious?

I don't like a lot of line on my spools and usually have considerable amount of backing. Using the duo gfix spinbait will require probably 10lb copoly and still be good enough for poppers and soft jerkbaits.

Line capacity is the difference. The deep holds 90 yards of #12 and the shallow holds 80 yards of #10

A shallower spool with less line on it is going to weigh less, therefore allowing easier casting with lighter baits. I wouldn't worry so much about the lb test of the line you'll be using, rather the diameter. The SV shallow spools are good for finesse, the deep spools are good for all around use. I don't consider a quarter ounce finesse, but some do.

An Alphas SV will never ever be in the same league as a TDZ, it´s like saying, I´m going to sell my Lambo to get me a Camaro. BTW, there are SV spools compatible with the TDZ, I actually have a couple.

With a little more line on the spool, it'll cast lures further because it won't slow down as quickly. If you go before a quarter oz then you'll want the fast start up of a more finesse oriented spool to make casting those lighter lures easier. A quarter oz lure shouldn't have any trouble getting the deeper spool started.

I actually enjoy using my Alphas SV as much as my Tdz. 1st time I've ever been able to say that about any reel. Is it in the same league? Probably not in terms of refinement, but it's pretty close in performance. I'm referring to a standard, stock Tdz of course. People have experienced sticky inductor problems when plugging a Steez SV spool in this platform from what I've read. I haven't encountered any issues with either SV 1000 spool.

Thanks for the input. The tdz with abec7 bearings casts great but does get a little wild. I think I need new pads for the tension knob as that could be a reason why it gives me fits. It will be buttoned up and only a slight adjustment makes it near free spool.

Lightly polishing the tips of the spool will help that to some degree.

Yeah I'd look at the rubber and brass pieces under the cast control knob. If they're flat, replacements could improve what you describe. I know I had that issue with my Sol and replacing them did the trick.

What's difference between steez sv103 deep spool and the rcs100sv deep? Appear to be same line capacity and specs? Steez one has more colors and is more expensive?

The steez 105 shallow spool casts slightly lighter than rcs1000sv deep, but has similar capacity on 12lb, 80 yard vs 90.

I'd probably be better off buying the cheaper 1000 as I doubt there is 30 dollars worth of performance difference.

I just ordered an SV 1000 for my T3 1016 for ~$100 with expedited shipping. That reel is already incredible, but it'll be nice to do double duty with it and spool up some light line on that SV. Can't wait to see how it handles.
