(='_'=) Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 well, i got a new to me boat and it has a Humminbird 587ci HD DI at the console. so, i have some questions about it. first of all, the previous owner glued the transducer to the bilge. i dont know how he glued it, but its there, instead of outside. i did a quick search and found out its a good spot and a lot of people recommend it. but, wont that affect the temperature readings?? and, does it affects down imaging? owner said he think it does, and that he never used the down imaging.... i havent had time to play with it, all i have used is the speed and depth readings.... but i want to gather as much info as possible for when i go to the lake, or to make the necesary adjustments (maybe taking the transducer to the outside) before going.... now, is there a good tutorial about understanding down imaging?? i have searched for a while but almost everything i find is about side imaging. my previous unit was very simple, i used it mainly for depth and temperature, so now i want to learn how to get the most out of this unit... thank you! Super User Wayne P. Posted August 11, 2015 Super User Posted August 11, 2015 The Down Imaging transducers that come with all Down Imaging units can be used on the transom or as shoot-thru. The adhesive for a shoot-thru installation is slow cure epoxy. Using Down Imaging and Side Imaging is the same thing, just oriented differently. Still takes the same settings and interpretation. The only difference is Side Imaging has a Range setting and Down Imaging doesn't. Down Imaging is based on the depth just like regular 2D sonar. Those transducers have a built-in temp sensor and to get water temp you need an accessory remote temp sensor TG W Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted August 11, 2015 Super User Posted August 11, 2015 No tutorial needed to understand down imaging. Drive over something and look at it. It looks a lot more like the object than with regular 2D sonar. Quote
(='_'=) Posted August 11, 2015 Author Posted August 11, 2015 thanx, ill have to go to the lake and play with it... i still need to know how to scroll around all the menus, so i hope i finish reading the manual (143 pages) by saturday... Quote
Ski213 Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 Check out Doug Vanderberg on you tube. Vanderberg goes through a lot of how to navigate through the options and when to do what and such. No substitute for spending time on the water using it but instructional videos like that as well as the manual will make your time more productive. Quote
(='_'=) Posted August 12, 2015 Author Posted August 12, 2015 thanx, i will!! thats what i wanted, to go with some idea and dont waste time discovering things i could have learnt on youtube or reading... Quote
(='_'=) Posted August 12, 2015 Author Posted August 12, 2015 yesterday i found this video unfotunately the audio is barely audible, so i closed it after 15 secods... seems like a good video, but bad execution... Quote
Ski213 Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 That is terrible audio. I've had some luck when I run across something like that by using ear buds to listen. I just tried it with that video and it helped alot. Try that. Quote

I fish on 2D sonar will show a lot better since it is within the sonar pulse for a longer period of time --exaggerated. Imaging uses a thin pulse so a subject will not be covered as long so it cannot be represented the same as 2D sonar. Quote
