AStrummerNamedJoe Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 Hi all! I just bought a new 201I and I noticed that during hard cranking I feel a slight vibration throughout the reel. There is no audible sound when cranking and the problem goes away or is at least unnoticeable when the spool is removed. Any ideas what's causing it and is it a big deal? Thanks for looking! Quote
Preytorien Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 I've personally had two issues with the Curado, and luckily they were embarrassingly simple to fix. The vibration you have is similar to what I had up until last week. It felt almost like a buzzing, a slightly geary noise on retrieve and it drove me nuts. I completely disassembled, degreased, and re-lubed the entire reel. Still the issue persisted. Turns out, the little blurb in the user manual about lightly lubing where the brakes rub inside the cover did the trick. The guy in this video shows where to do it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7OY2_Ukt5Y I know that this has fixed both reel noises I've had, and they've both been drastically different noises, so this might (hopefully) fix yours too. Let us know how it goes. 3 Quote
stkbassn Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 A little off topic, sorry OP...relevant though to Curado I... I really like the new Curado I's but it's kind of ridiculous to me that you have to do all of these things to get the reel "right" when every Curado I've had before this was great right out of the box. My I series was trouble free right out of the box so it's not all of them I suppose. The new one's don't seem as user friendly as the E or G models. I wonder if the new Citica I is like this. I definitely prefer the old braking system in the D, E, and G series Curado and the Citicas. To each his own. I love the way the I series looks and feels in hand. I personally had zero problems with mine out of the box and thought it was pretty sweet but I still don't think the E or G can be beat in performance or ease of use. I might get roasted for this. I meant to add that this is coming from me, a guy who does not break down reels or do a lot of internal anything because I don't really know how or feel comfortable doing it so I'm afraid I might damage my equipment. Maybe I'm in the minority, not sure. I've been fishing for 35 years and I've never cleaned or lubed a reel. All I've owned have performed great as long as I've had them....not sure when I pay big money for a reel that I should have to do a thing other than adjust brakes to get it to perform the way it was promised in the ad....plug and play. I also take my car to have the oil changed but I can change a tire! LOL. No mechanic here folks... 1 Quote
bassbassontherange Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 There's not much to maintenance at all on the Curado I. Lube the racetrack and you're good to go. I've had mine for over a year, fished them heavily, and that's all they've needed. This literally takes 30 seconds, tops, to do. Sure, there are people who say the reels are packed with too much oil and grease coming from the factory. Those require a little more work, maybe 15-30 min to get right, but that's not specific to the Curado or Shimano. In fact, Shimano reels are not known for being packed that way. I've owned every series of Curado since the 200B's. The D's and E's are killer reels, but I think the I is a marginally better performer, and one reason to me is the braking system. I'll give you it requires more maintenance, but I'll definitely take the sacrifice of time being that it's approx 1 min/year. I know you're not arguing it's a bad reel, but to others reading, there's not much at all you have to do. Fantastic reel for the money. 2 Quote
Super User BassinLou Posted August 11, 2015 Super User Posted August 11, 2015 I have been really enjoying all 3 of my Curado I's. My frogging reel does get a lot of use so before each long outing (6-8hrs of constant use) , I lightly oil the brake drum and have had 0 issues. Quote

It's very slight but it bothers me. Quote

Super User deep Posted August 12, 2015 Super User Posted August 12, 2015 How loose is the spool tension knob? Quote
zachb34 Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 I would check the worm gear and make sure that it's clean along with the screw for the line guide to male sure that's tightened. There's so many moving parts it could be a lot of things. Does the reel still make the vibration if you hold it upside down. Quote

After putting the reel on a rod and tightening the spool tension knob, the problem seems to have gone away! Thanks a ton for the suggestions! Thanks for the link as that has solved the problem, which shouldn't be a surprise as you pointed out it's in the manual! RTFM indeed! Quote

Delaware Valley Tackle Posted August 13, 2015 Posted August 13, 2015 From what I've seen of the I reels what you see is normal. A rigid fairly light reel is less apt to run 100% silently and spinning and cranking a reel in hand is not necessarily the best indicator of what it will be like on the water. As for being "Packed" with grease, it's just that they grease the spool bearings to offset minimal maintenance schedules. Flushing and oiling them will improve casting. Quote

I will definitely look into flushing the bearings! Quote
