What Rod Blank For Hollow Body Frog?

You definitely want a rod with fast action for working the frog so that the tip isn't swinging all over the place, I learned this first hand from trying to work a hollow body with an ugly stik in my earlier days of bass fishing. You also probably want to go with a medium heavy to heavy power, as you're gonna want some backbone when you're trying to set those thick frog hooks.

Imo frog rods are technique specific to a large extent. You want the power of course due to the cover but you want a tip that will load for casting. Rainshadow, MHX and others offer blanks that fit the bill. In the past I've used in-shore Rod blanks to get the action / power mix I wanted.

Any 843 blank will work.  That's normally a 7 ft MH Fast tip.  It is a good multipurpose rod.  My personal hollow body frog rod is built on a Rainshadow Rx8 XMB843.

Good and bad problem to have! Just depends on your area and what you want to accomplish, how you fish, and budget!! But these are full blown MSRP!! You can get all the best parts and still be under.

I am impressed with my MHX MB874 7'3" H/F blank, so when the time comes I am going to have a frog rod built on the MHX MB844 7' H/F blank. I have always liked a 7' rod for frogging. I used the 7'3 the other day and it was fine, but I want something just a hair shorter for tight spot, like skipping under docks/over hanging trees, etc... In the spring and fall when the weed cover is lighter, I like to use a MH powered rod.

The D is 3 inches longer and has an extra fast action.  I only build topwater or jerk bait rods with an extra fast action.  I think that puts too much stress on the tip during the hook sets on a frog rod.

 

And without comparing the blanks side by side, I would say, just based on the list price on the Dobyins with Kigan Sic guides, the Rainshadow blank would be far superior to the blank Dobyns started with.

Well everyone flips and pitches differently. They also use different rod blanks in different environments. Keep this in mind always. Down in Texas, this is the models that people like for what your looking for:

A shorter rod will generate more power, but a 7-ft rod moves the bass more quickly out of cover (Haul Stroke)

 

Heavy 

Medium-heavy power is adequate for frogging, but the weight of the weeds added to the weight of the bass

is when a heavy power blank is appreciated.

 

Fast

With a med-hvy blank I'd go with an extra-fast taper for better hook-setting. But with a 'heavy' rod, a 'fast' action tip

offers more fighting tension, whereas an extra-fast taper isn't as effective at preventing an instant of slack line.

 

As for blank brand, that's your baby  ;-)

Heavy is not always better, particularly after throwing it all day.  Plus I don't horse them out of the thick stuff.  I have a 36 volt tm so I hold pressure and go get them.  The rapid decline in my physical abilities after passing the 45 yr mark has forced me to rethink the way I fish.
