I want to buy a kayak/canoe but I also dont want to buy one only for the price to drop $200+ in two weeks. With summer nearly over, in retail terms, what is the best time of the year to buy one?

Retail stores won't really have great deals any time of year. I'd watch craigslist. Fall and spring. People will dump them barely used for less than half price.

Do you plan to buy in a store or online? I bought a kayak online a couple years ago. It was a very good deal because it was the previous years model. That's another option.

I don't have a problem buying online, as long as the shipping isn't too much.  Some online stores want $150+ for shipping.  Some brick and mortar stores offer free store pick up, but curiously, Cabelas charges $60 to pick up in store.

Watch CraigsList as fall approaches and some people decide they want other toys more. They'll unload them cheaper. But you might have to sift through a bunch to find one specifically for fishing that meets your needs.

Austin Kayak has free shipping.  keep checking their site often, they'll have closeouts on a lot of models, but it is usually very limited quantity so you'll have to act fast

This!

I found a nice perception over the weekend for a friend. Dirt cheap.

But here in Cali, in the Sierra's our stores drop their prices this time of year...

And for the comment about ACK. I can't say enough for that company...Walked in and bought my first yak with them in 05, and they have been sending me boats every few years ever since.

So with all that said, the best time to buy a kayak is when you have the money.

Unless you are looking at big budget or high caliber rigs, take a peak at Wal-Mart's website. I was recently I the market for a canoe, and found that Wally World had one that was nearly $400 cheaper than everywhere else I shopped. Plus it came with added features of a built in cooler, rod holders, paddle holders, a water proof compartment, and a squared off stern to mount a trolling motor to. None of the same sized small canoes at other retailers had these features, and it ended up being about half the price (same brand and everything). Because it was such a large item, it had to be delivered by freight- so there was a charge for shipping, but it was only 9 bucks. Just got it in a couple weeks ago and my buddy and I already booked a lakeside camping trip. I will let you know how it goes, but seemed well worth the investment

Dick's Sporting Goods! They have a phenomenal boat sale that goes on around Memorial Day weekend and on through June. They sell kayaks all across the board in price-range at huge discounts.

Used on CL in the winter/spring... Check with your local shop, as they may periodically get blemished models in that can be had at a significant discount. (I own a blem 2014 Ride 115 that I got for $300 less than the unblem'd. I just have a mangled sticker on the boat. Structurally, it's fine.)

Otherwise, check the major retailers like Bass Pro, Cabelas, etc, and watch for sales/clearances. Smaller, boutique kayak shops don't hold tons of inventory and expect to be able to move what they have without needing to go all bargain-basement on prices.

I got a huge deal on a fishing yak last January.  Took the store all last year and half the winter to figure out that SUP's and whitewater yaks was where the money was at, and they ditched the fishing kayaks for well below cost.  I'm a happy yakker.

I bought the last 2 canoes that Dicks had a couple of years ago for $200 each. I sold them the next year for $250 each.
