It's an Abu Garcia Black Max 2, the low profile one, 2 months or so old.

When it happened:

I got a backlash, got lazy and tried to fix it with the trick where you put your thumb on the spool and turn the handle (first time I did it). I heard a click (maybe it was thumb bar engaging or maybe something getting damaged). So it didn't work and and just untangled it normally (picking at the line). Next time I try reeling in, the drag won't hold. Basically, my worm lure is heavy enough to keep it from reeling in.

What I tried:

Wiping the drag washers, tightening the drag (to the tightest), checking for slipping line on the spool (ghost drag?), made sure I positioned those two washers in a () position.

Other things I noticed: I also completely removed the line and cranked the handle. The spool does turn but putting my thumb fairly lightly on the spool will stop it from spinning while I can still crank the handle.

The drag washers should still be good, since it's pretty new and its not used too much.

Also, does anyone have the schematics for this reel. Can't seem to find it online. Abu Garcia's website only has the Black Max 1 which is similar but definitely has different parts. I just want to make sure I put everything back together right.

Any ideas on what I can do to fix? Thanks for any responses.

Here's a couple of picture if it helps.

i would guess your missing a spacer in the assembly.  Even a contaminated drag will do better than what your describing so check out the schematic and i bet your missing a washer or part.

yeah, I checked there too. Its a bit confusing to me but there seems to be a Ambassadeur Black Max 2 and a regular Black Max 2. That one thats available on Mikes is the Ambassadeur and looking at it, a lot of the parts are different even though its low profile too (I had thought that Ambassadeurs are the round/cylinder type baitcast). In Abu Garcia's website there is a Ambassadeur Black Max 1 and a Black Max 1. The Black Max 1 is closer to what I have but there is no Black Max 2 listed. Still can't find the schematics for it. Thanks though

Thanks man, your idea was right. I wasn't missing anything but you gave me the idea that I put something on wrong (I was pretty confident i hadn't). After looking at some schematics for different reels, I noticed that I put the washer(that isn't flat, 4th part from the left on my pic) on upside down. That groove thing on the washer made up for that space I lost.

So it seems that one of those regular culprits for loose drag was the problem. I haven't tried it with line and bait yet, but now I have a much harder time stopping the spool with my thumb and when I do, I can't crank.

No, I had braid all the way last time, which apparently can cause those slips. I've read at some places that putting on mono first then braid will help prevent that so that's what I did.

you have to go through the files , it's in there ...

Yea like I said, Ambassadeur Black Max 2 is different from the Black Max 2. I see a lot of parts on the Ambassadeur that aren't on the regular Black Max or that look completely different.
