Need A New Reel

I'm trying to find a new reel. I had an Abu Garcia revo and it broke. I'm trying to find a reel that can be used for freshwater and inshore. I saw the shimano curado 200 i. But don't want to be stuck with one reel choice. It has to be under $200 and last me a very long time. Any opinions?

That Shimano Curado 200 i is a pretty sweet reel and should be able to pull that double duty you're looking for nicely.

It seems like this topic comes up once every two weeks or so. You'll find the consensus for a reel under 200 is the Curado I. I agree. Other excellent reels in that price range are the Tatula type R, Revo S, BPS Pro Qualifier, older Curado's and Chronarch's, ect.

 

Whatever you do, if you're looking to save some green, check out the auction sites. Especially with Shimano, you can pick up a used reel at a great price. New reels are 25-35% less as well. 

 

Or.... be a good guy and support your local bait store:)

Well while you won't like it I will echo the comments about the Curado I. Depending on your spool capacity needs and presentations another couple options I'd look at are a Scorpion 200, Scorpion 1000XT, 2015 Daiwa Alphas SV, Shimano Casitas, Shimano Citica I. Those are just interesting options out there, I don't have experience with all of them.

I strongly recommend the alphas sv.  I'm so impressed with how it casts just about anything in my tackle box.  It has brass gears and an aluminum frame.  It is saltwater safe.  The sv spool is extremely forgiving.  At the $200 I don't even have to think about it.

Tatula type HD can be had for ~$150 on amazon. It's a 200 size reel with 100mm handles.

actually, if you want a 6.3:1 ratio, there's a tat HD on there for 137.99 right now. A steal.

Tatula Type R in your favorite retreive.  Daiwa really hit it out of the park with that reel!   Shimano's are good, but bang for buck, castability, and retreive smoothness out the box the Daiwa Tatula  HD or R is tough to beat! I own and use many of the Shimano's mentioned and  still would pick the Type R for under $200, you can find deals as stated in the thread all the time! Only negative is that its a bit heavy.

I have quite a few reels that are 5-10 years old, only used saltwater, they all still work very good.  I only use spinning, If I were to use  a b/c I'd want a longer cranking handle like the hogtechs.  I have replaced some odf my spinnin handles with longer ones, the difference in cranking is night and day.
