Topwaterspook Posted August 7, 2015 Posted August 7, 2015 Today I took my next door neighbor out in the boat. This is the first time we had fished together. Toward the end of the day, he hooked a musky on 6 pound mono. She was way too big for my net. Her body length was 2 1/2 times the diameter of a 21" net. Which works out to 53". Anyone have any idea what it might have weighed ?...............watching his technique while fighting that fish was inspiring. He back reeled and kept tension the whole time. It was like watching a master. Had it been me, I would have probably have broken her off during the first or second run. After what seemed like an eternity, I got her head in the net but there was just too much of her. She flopped out leaving the small bass bait hung in the netting. We didn't even get a picture. 4 Quote
Super User 00 mod Posted August 7, 2015 Super User Posted August 7, 2015 Great times! That is a true trophy muskie too! Many people would have dove in after that thing! HAHA Jeff Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted August 7, 2015 Super User Posted August 7, 2015 Great times! That is a true trophy muskie too! Many people would have dove in after that thing! HAHA Jeff I dunno if I would've dove in after something that could take your hand off. hahaha! To the OP: That sucks but hey a lot of the fun is the fight. Sounds like it was a fun time! Quote
Turkey sandwich Posted August 7, 2015 Posted August 7, 2015 That's awesome! Sounds like a great experience! I remember foul hooking a 40"er on 8lb mono. Trying to net it and not break off was a circus. I could imagine your neighbor's pain on a 50"er that could easily have been 35-40lbs. Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted August 7, 2015 Super User Posted August 7, 2015 Awesome experience! If she was 50" that'd put her around the 40 lb range. Quote
Topwaterspook Posted August 7, 2015 Author Posted August 7, 2015 It was an impressive sight for sure. She was definitely the biggest I've ever been close to. Ironically, he hooked her right next to the boat as he was retrieving his cast. This is only about 30-40 yards away from the spot where I watched the PFC unload a musky net a few years ago. That was an eye opening treat. They weighed and tagged over a dozen as I looked on. They told me that there were some big ones around. Do muskys prowl a circuit or was it just coincidence we were that close ? Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted August 7, 2015 Super User Posted August 7, 2015 Stitch now you know why my net is so big. At 50" she would have weighed between 30-40 lbs with normal girth. Quote
Topwaterspook Posted August 7, 2015 Author Posted August 7, 2015 Thanks for the input, guys. I really haven't had a whole lot of experience with muskies and was curious about an average weight. She looked to be about 4 inches or so wide from a top view. It also was a cool shade of tan with darker vertical bars and rather reddish, speckled fins. All in all a beautiful fish. 1 Quote
Super User RoLo Posted August 7, 2015 Super User Posted August 7, 2015 Based on historic records kept by the musky clubs in Hayward, Wisconsin, the average musky weighed 12 pounds, which is a fish about 37" long. The serpent that you were dealing with was 'far' above average Roger Quote
NathanW Posted August 7, 2015 Posted August 7, 2015 That has happened to me a few time with these Chinook and Steelhead we have in our river while bass fishing. The bass net just wont hold em and there is no hand landing a chrome fish from a boat. Quote
Super User *Hootie Posted August 9, 2015 Super User Posted August 9, 2015 I lost a big muskie once because of small net. It shouldn't have hit my bass lure anyhow. Hootie P.S. do you net your bass with a bassinet? Quote
