I got caught without my license on me the other day. I explained to him that I had one and simply forgot to bring it but still had to follow him all the way back to his truck so he could run me. To avoid having to do this again, is making copies legal? Does anyone do it? I make so many spontaneous trips, and have multiple bags and setups that I tend to leave it behind more often than I would care to admit to. Thanks in advance for any help and replies.

I purchase mine (Michigan) on line and print "Several" copies.

One for the boat, one for the truck, one for the house and then there's the "just in case" copy.

These are actual print outs of the document which I do sign.

I think now most states offer the on line option.

I have a pdf version of it on my smart phone for my Maryland one.  My NY license stays in my tackle box.

Here in VA, you do it online and they email it to you.  No reason at all not to have multiple copies.  I have one in my tackle box, one in my kayak crate, one in my wallet and the digital always avail on my phone.  I did have one warden who accepted the phone version, but didn't really like it and suggested that next time we meet I should have a paper copy on me.

Never hurts to have several print outs. I do this also.

I have several copies. I don't see why they will hassle you. The bar code doesn't change when you make copies.

Thanks for the replies guys. I cannot believe I never had the idea to make multiple copies before. He was cool the whole time and we talked about various places to fish in the area but threatened me with a 200 dollar ticket if he caught me without it again. I think it was earlier that day I had told my wife about the lack of game wardens around here. He was the first I have seen in the 12 plus years I have lived here. Northern Virginia on the other hand is a different story...

How would having multiple copies fix the leaving it behind problem? Won't that just be more licenses to forget? Lol.

In NY, you need your state issued license. A copy ain't gonna cut it. Econ officers here have a bedside manner that makes a state trooper seem like Santa.

No beause when I go I take different vehicles or different gear. And usually I'm in a rush or it's spontaneous. Depending on where I'm going sometimes I don't even take my wallet or phone. With multiple copies I could have one in all of my gears bags, in my wallet and in my vehicles.

I'm just poking fun. If it's legal, gave at it. I know my SC license was just an email, so I could make copies easy. NY is printed on special paper.

Whenever I get my Sc license they email it to me and send me another copy in the mail. I'm not sure why but I appreciate it all the same!

Here in Mass, we can only get our licenses online now. And you can print out as many as you like. I keep one in my car and one in each of two tackle satchels that I go fishing with, in plastic.

I'm in florida and have a 5 year license so I get a actual plastic card, but have the option of printing as many as I'd like. I just keep it in my wallet since I have to have that on me at all times in the first place.

Why not just put it in your wallet?

I rarely take my wallet or cellphone with me. Less things to ruin or lose. I realize this is making me look or sound stupid or brain dead lol but I'm really not. I usually have it on me, I just end up in situations where it is in another pair of pNts or shorts, in another vehicle, or in another tackle bag which is at home or somewhere else.

Because he´s always in a rush or spontaneous, well, that´s what he said a few posts above. If I were on a rush or be spontaneous I would have it in my wallet at all times so I would´t forgery it because you know me, I´m always on a rush or spontaneous.

I usually only get the short term one, and I get a copy in the mail after the date has expired. Pretty funny.

This. Plus even tho I know I'm supposed to have it on me at all times, like I said in an earlier post I had never seen a game warden here and figured just running my info would work all the same if I ever encountered one. If it's a planned trip it's always on me. If its an after work thing or spotting a place to get the lines wet after the kids practice or game thats a different story.

The first year I had visited SC that happened to me as well. Seems like a waste of money to me. My wife likes to hold on to them for some reason.

So, why not just keep it in your wallet and then you will have it with you... I must be missing something here.

Because I have never carried a wallet with me when I am in the woods or on the water. Especially since I go wading alot and usually end up traveling on my mountain bike to get there. I believe in packing as light as possible. Or say I got in late one night and left my wallet or fishing license in the car and my wife, who leaves before I do needs the car for x y and z reasons. Do I really drive an hour all the way home to get it and an hour back to the spot? No I don't. I said it happens more often than I care to admit but it's not like it's an everyday thing.

I strongly urge you to BEGIN to carry your wallet with your license in it.. You still need to have a state issued ID card on you anyway.. Doesn't take much effort to start a new habit. The excuse of I've never carried a wallet hunting or fishing is not adequate IMO. Avoid future difficulties with a license in a wallet is my advice.

Good luck..

Buy a lifetime license and see if they are able to tattoo it on your forearm.  :eyebrows:
