Hi everyone. I am a rookie at this so please go easy on me ;)

I have looked around online and on here for topics on storing the fishing pole once done with fishing, and I am not finding much info on it.

I don't know when the next time I will go fishing, so I wanted to put the pole away. what is the proper way to take the pole apart?

do I leave it assembled, with the hook and line and everything in tact, and attach the hook to the hook holder?

do I take it apart so it is smaller? and if so how to keep the fishing line clean and coiled up?

I found this video. Is this how you do it?

I'm lazy and fish 1-2 times a weekend so I just leave everything hooked up as long as the line is clean and hasn't been nicked up.  I always store the pole in a cool dry place, away from direct sunlight and humidity, no matter if it's short term or long term.  If it's long term storage I'll take the hooks/weights/swivels off; if it's a spinning rod then reel the line in and put the tag end onto the line tab on the spool, or on a casting reel tie a perfection loop and wrap it around the reel and tighten so it doesn't bird nest.  Also if your spinning reel doesn't have a line tab on the spool, just wrap a rubber band around the line on the spool.

I found a 3 shelf rolling cart with rod racks on both sides on Craigslist, I keep it in the house cause Texas is humid, the plastic pieces that held the rods were a bit hard and I had to force the rod into place so I replaced them with velcro straps. Before that shelf I just put them in an empty corner. I always leave baits tied on since I use them often, just don't reel down to much before storing the rod, it could damage the line or rod eventually.

My pet peeve is when people leave the hook in the holder and then turn the reel so that the rod is bent almost double and then just throw it in the back of their truck. Drives me nuts!

90% of my rods still have last years line on them.    lol     About the only thing I do between trips is make sure I take plastic baits off that contain salt.    Not good for the hooks or hook keepers.

Lol see it all the time, I constantly have to tell my wife to stop reeling the lure into the first line guide, she gets excited with every fish and reels it all the way in lol

I guess I'm kinda OCD with my gear. I fish maybe 4 times a week and after every trip, I loosen the drag on my reels and store them (on the rods) standing upright in a rod rack that I got from Cabelas. I don't remove the lures after every trip, just at the end of the season. They are stored out of the sunlight. Reels are cleaned and lubed at least once a year and line gets replaced as needed.

I built a rod rack for about $20 that holds 11 rods with reels vertical. Im consistant in everytime i finish using a rod (either for day or just switching techniques) that i hook lure into keeper, wrap lure end of line around rod once with alight tension on lure, just enough to keep line and lure on place, but not so much to bend rod. Then place stick jacket over rod. I keep my jackets on even while fishing to keep rods from tangling up since its just quicker to unsleeve one rod than untangle lines from all when you have 6-8 rods on deck.

I read to take the used line and spool it on to another reel. The line is still new on the inside.

I replace my line on the rod setups I use every spring. I check the last 20' of line often during the season. I cut it off if the line has abrasions. I retie my knots often. The line/knots is the weakest link.

I store my spools of line in a cool dark place.

Oh yeah, a rod rack useful if you have the space and have a lot of rods to store.  I have a couple of Shimano standups I got from local stores that closed, and a plastic Okuma rack.  The Okuma rack is actually pretty nice and level.  There's some nice wall racks you can install in the garage as well.  If it's only 1-2 rods you need to store you don't need to spend money on a rack, just find a spot in the corner of the garage where they won't get beat up.

on baitcasters , always loosen the drag , it's not good to keep it buttoned down !!!

as far as storing rods , i keep my rods under 8 ft. leaning against a wall and my longer rods (swimbait rods) up on plastic coated hooks horizontly  on the wall and i have fishing shelves holding baits that i don't like to keep in tackle boxes on .

Spools of line go in a drawer in the basement.  Rods and reels get cleaned up and go in the rod holder in the basement.  I don't leave them in the car.  It gets too hot in there.

I keep all line in inside, stored in a 6 drawer dresser I use for tackle.
