This past weekend the wife and I fished a small lake in our 14' john boat powered with a trolling motor. We were returning back to the ramp after fishing several hours not catching anything. My trolling motor stopped working I pulled the motor out of the water and discovered what happened, monofilament fishing line  wrapped around motor and prop. I removed the line and the motor worked the rest of evening/

Many years ago a TM weed guard was made, it was plastic and looked like a cone that would slde on the motor and was clamped and it worked. Haven't been able to located them any more.

Any suggestions?

thanks,

I googled the trolling motor weed guard and found the Moss Hawg weed guard. Ordered 1 set and will try it out, not what I'm looking for but it should work.

Will review it.

Anyone else used this?

Weed guards have been around almost as long as motors.  I've tried a couple over the years, when I finally got my first TM.  It kept the prop clear, because all the crap would build up and hang on it.  You spend more time pulling the motor up and clearing it than you did without it.  At least the motor would chop up some of it.  Actually tried another years ago, and while a totally different design, it ended up no better than the first.

About the best weed guard I've found is the four blade Ninja prop but the stuff still gets hung around the shaft.  As for fishing line getting wrapped around the prop, as long as these idiots keep throwing it in the water, it's going to happen.  If that prop touches it, it's probably doing to suck it in and for the one or two times a weed guard might keep that from happening but from my experience with them the battle with keeping the weed guard clear of weeds is not worth it.

Now, my last experience with a TM weed guard was probably 25 years ago, maybe someone has one that works now, buy I doubt I will ever waste the money on trying another.

I have one that worked great but doesn't fit my trolling motor anymore because of my transducer. I'll have to try to remember to check the name on it.

The best one I have used was nothing more than a stainless steel knife blade that hose clamped to the motor housing protruding toward the prop. The skeg prevented the blade from sliding out of position. As the prop rotated the weeds were cut by the blade as the prop turned. I don't remember where I got the thing but it worked pretty well especially with the 4 bladed prop...I still have the thing but did not save the packaging.

Edit- Just watched timcauliffe post above on the ninja grass blade. Not the exact same tool but very similar. This works well

If you have an old putty knife, cut the blade off and sharpen the edges. Hose clamp it to the side of the TM that will cut grass before it gets to the prop. I've tried this and it works pretty well. Nothing's going to work all the time and I'm not sure it will protect against line but for the cost, it's worth the effort.

Received the MossHawg weed guard today, fast shipping. Took no time to install it today after dinner. Hope to be able to try it out one evening this week or this weekend.
