kingmotorboat Posted August 3, 2015 Posted August 3, 2015 Looking at one of these for a jig rod and wondering how they are for bottom contact. I own 2 omens and love them but.I'm thinking about trying something new Quote
Super User slonezp Posted August 4, 2015 Super User Posted August 4, 2015 Here's my opinion. Great rod for the price. I own 3 or 4 generations of HMG's totaling maybe 10 rods or so. Never had an issue with them until now. I bought 2 new ones this past April. I sent both in for warranty replacement this past Saturday. Both rods had different defects. One has a bad reel seat and the other has a defective tip. The HMG's have a limited lifetime warranty. I was responsible for paying return shipping. My main flipping rod is a 7 1/2 foot telescopic HMG. No longer available and my favorite out of all of them. Has a cork handle. The newer rods have a cork/foam composition handle which is actually quite comfortable, I just really like the look of real cork. I switched my worm flipping rod from the last generation to the newest generation because I like the split grip better for flipping. This is one of the ones that got sent back. I wouldn't hesitate on buying more. I also own 2 Eagle GT spinning rods. We'll see how this warranty stuff pans out. Quote

Interesting just really interested in seeing what else is out there in casting rods in this price range. As I said I.own 2 omens and love them but who's to say I won't love something else more. there is just so soooooooo much out there in this range that I don't know where to start hahaha Quote
IDUTBass Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 I have only tried their spinning rod. Picked one up brand new for 60 bucks here. I've been really impressed so far but havent had a chance to hook into anything big with it yet. Quote
kingmotorboat Posted August 4, 2015 Author Posted August 4, 2015 I recommend waiting. The new II will be available in a couple of weeks or so. I hope they offer the 6' Medium Fast again. I want one. The 7'3 heavy is what I want for jigs Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted August 4, 2015 Super User Posted August 4, 2015 I have 3 different lines of Fenwick rods, I have spinning and casting in both the Elite Tech Smallmouth and Aetos lines and I have a casting version of the new HMG and I can tell you that I never dreamed $100 can get you this much rod. I have had the pleasure of using the *** and to me performance of both are very similar, head to head I'd give a slight edge to the ***, it is lighter, not by a lot but you can feel it, and it has a more modern look if that is important. The HMG is well balanced with great deal of sensitivity, both rods are similar in that aspect but your choices are limited in the HMG. You are looking at a 7'3" Heavy, the HMG doesn't have it, they have a 7' MH and a 7'6" MH but I will say that after fishing them both the HMG fishes a little heavier than the ***, the medium HMG is similar to a MH ***. My recommendation is to stay with the ***, and there are a couple of reasons but the biggest reason is that it is a lateral move, you aren't getting a better or a worse rod, you are getting about the same rod but I think you would like the HMG if you did try one, but you really like the *** so I'd stay with that if I were you. boostr Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 Good info, I'm planning on getting the HMG 6'6" MH it comes with the shorter handle which is great for my yak fishing. Quote
Super User slonezp Posted August 12, 2015 Super User Posted August 12, 2015 Just thought I'd throw this out there. I got my 2 replacement rods today, 11 days after I shipped them out ups. Take note. Per Fenwicks warranty, shipping was on my dime. I shipped them in a pvc tube so total cost for tube and to ship ups insured for $300 was $55.00 regular ground. Quote

Super User slonezp Posted August 12, 2015 Super User Posted August 12, 2015 just curious why you'd spend extra money on a PVC tube and insurance to ship broken rods? PVC because I have no idea where to get a cardboard tube 8 feet long. Insurance because if the rods disappeared in transit I'd be out 2 rods. Quote

How's the power rating on the HMG rods, are they true to the description or do they run lighter or heavier? Quote
