Fun4Me Posted August 2, 2015 Posted August 2, 2015 Is it a good practice put your preferred brand of hook on a lure right away? Or do you just use what came with the lure? Quote
ThatZX14Fella Posted August 2, 2015 Posted August 2, 2015 I've never replaced the trebles. I tend to have bad luck with hooks so I don't feel like having to yank them out of a finger anymore than I have to. 4 Quote
Jon G Posted August 2, 2015 Posted August 2, 2015 Depends on the bait. Some come with great hooks others not so much... 4 Quote
Big C Posted August 2, 2015 Posted August 2, 2015 If they are dull, yes. If they are sharp, no. The exception would be swimbaits, I like to switch those out for Owner St-36 Stinger hooks. On a side note, River2Sea comes with some of the best stock hooks out there. Quote
Super User Chris at Tech Posted August 2, 2015 Super User Posted August 2, 2015 Depends on the brand. Some brands come with decent hardware and some come with garbage. 3 Quote
TwoCan Posted August 2, 2015 Posted August 2, 2015 Unless I am putting on bigger/smaller hooks to adjust the fall rate, I've never had an issue with shtock hooks. TC Quote
Fisher-O-men Posted August 2, 2015 Posted August 2, 2015 Cheap lures, cheap hooks! Buy quality lures, check for sharpness, sharpen the dull ones. Quote

I tend to change them out anyways on some baits for EWG hooks. Quote
Super User Maxximus Redneckus Posted August 3, 2015 Super User Posted August 3, 2015 I change my hooks if im opening a new lure and i dont hook myself 2 Quote
Super User bigbill Posted August 3, 2015 Super User Posted August 3, 2015 If I change one out I go one size larger. Quote
NotnatsSamoht Posted August 3, 2015 Posted August 3, 2015 I'll use stock hooks until I bend them or there dull before I replace them, but I don't fish tournaments so great hooks aren't necessary for my trips. Quote

I tend to change them out anyways on some baits for EWG hooks. Daiichi, super sharp, but not terribly strong. They're great on their other baits, but on the Swavers where you tend to use heavier gear, they might not cut it. I change the hooks out on most of the baits I buy except for Spro and R2S. Quote
Super User Big Bait Fishing Posted August 3, 2015 Super User Posted August 3, 2015 if i change out treble hooks , on go Owner ST-41's , mostly on big baits .. 1 Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted August 3, 2015 Super User Posted August 3, 2015 Only a couple of lures I buy that automatically change hooks. Most I buy are just fine, when I do replace I use 4x, not really fussy on who makes them. Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted August 3, 2015 Super User Posted August 3, 2015 I don't. I don't fish for toothy critters or catch them by accident. If the hooks are that bad on a lure, I replace it. Usually, if you have a lure that good, you tend to lose it before the hooks require replacement. I don't know of any lure I have that comes with hooks so bad that I'd go out and spend more $$$ to replace them. Quote
blckshirt98 Posted August 3, 2015 Posted August 3, 2015 A lot of stock hooks are great right out the package. If you're buying a new brand/bait, I'd check the stock hooks and only replace them if the hooks are flimsy or cheap. Quote
poisonokie Posted August 3, 2015 Posted August 3, 2015 I usually fish mine right out of the package, and then once they go dull up grade to owner 36's or 41's. Quote

Also, they tend to slam rebel draws, so I always slap some st-41's on those bad boys. Quote
jitterbug127 Posted August 3, 2015 Posted August 3, 2015 sharpen them right out of the package. That is your best bet. Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted August 4, 2015 Super User Posted August 4, 2015 Depending on the brand. I found the stock hooks from Strike King pretty good. I found Rebel and store brands pretty crappy. Quote

Kyle46N Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 Only if it's a cheap off brand lure. Bass pro brand, cabela's come to mind in the past. Not sure if they've upgraded. The only other's I switch out are saltwater hardbaits with those anti corrosion coatings on them. Gives them a silver/gray appearance. Can't stand those things. Quote
Sonik Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 Cabela's has upgraded theirs from no-name to Matzuo. I love their Dig-Its and Grave Diggers which both have the Matzuos. I'm fairly sure Bass Pro doesn't list their hooks but I've heard good things. When I have to switch, I do VMC or Eagle Claw 374s and they work fine. Quote
Canyon explorer Posted August 5, 2015 Posted August 5, 2015 The only hooks I automatically change out are on Smithwick Rogues, and Zara Spooks. The others I automatically tune them and re sharpen them, especially wiggle warts. Quote
