Super User Jeff H Posted August 1, 2015 Super User Posted August 1, 2015 I bought a flat screen monitor a couple years ago and thought I had arrived. Bought a wireless printer a couple weeks ago and thought the same. Bought a wireless keyboard and mouse today and figured I was coming out of the dark a bit more again. All this stuff is nice but I feel like I'm still way behind. What more can I do now for a continued advance in the pc world without blowing a big wad of cash? Does anybody have a computer setup just for dealing with your Lowrance HDS units? I am no geek and pretty much computer illiterate but I gotta get in the d**n game here...... Quote
AdamsEye Posted August 2, 2015 Posted August 2, 2015 I don't have any lowrance experince, but I have been building computers for years. If it is hardware related issues, like slow performance I can help. If it is software related I might not be able to help to much. Quote
Super User Jeff H Posted August 2, 2015 Author Super User Posted August 2, 2015 Thank you. That is very generous of you, will keep in mind. Quote
Super User Chris at Tech Posted August 2, 2015 Super User Posted August 2, 2015 What are you trying to do with your computer? Just general home usage for email, web browsing, etc? Quote
Super User Jeff H Posted August 2, 2015 Author Super User Posted August 2, 2015 Yes. Just general use I guess. It works pretty good just every time I go get something new the look on these guys faces says "you are way behind in this technology stuff". Thing is, I don't know what I don't know....ya know? I don't know what more I could be doing with it. Quote
Super User Chris at Tech Posted August 2, 2015 Super User Posted August 2, 2015 As far as I'm concerned, the thing with computers is that new stuff comes along at such a rapid pace that there comes a point where spending money on upgrading an existing PC no longer makes sense, and the wiser option becomes to start considering purchasing a new machine. But if you're only doing web browsing and things like that, there's no compelling reason to purchase new machines as often as if you were doing more resource-intensive tasks like gaming, video editing, etc. Based on what you've mentioned above, here's what I'd suggest: 1) ensure you're using the latest version of your web browser. If you're not, download the latest. This should be free 2) make sure your virus protection is up to speed. If you already have virus protection and a valid license, this should be free. If you don't have any, definitely get some. You can get decent stuff for free, look on places like CNET 3) If your PC is a few years old and you're planning to keep it for a few more years, a RAM upgrade would be my suggestion. Based on your PC model, you can probably get what you need for less than $40 Quote

Super User Ratherbfishing Posted August 3, 2015 Super User Posted August 3, 2015 Do your computers do pretty much everything you require of them? If so, what's the compulsion to keep up with the Jones'? Quote
Longo Posted August 3, 2015 Posted August 3, 2015 Any of you guys upgrade to Windows 10 yet? I've had it a few days and I'm pretty impressed. I wasn't a fan of 8. Best part is that the upgrade is FREE! Quote

When they don't no more, let me know. I will help you in any way I can to save money and build your own rig! At the least I can point you to a good deal! Quote
