Magnetic Brakes Not Working Properly

The magnetic brakes on my Abu Garcia Silver Max are not working properly. No matter where I have them set the spool still spins out of control when the bait reaches the water. I have had this real for about 4-6 years, can't exactly remember. Are there any suggestions for remedying this?

try tightning the spool tension nob , take a look at the " setting up a baitcaster '' at the top !!!!

Your thumb and the spool tension setting are most probably not working properly.

Your spool should still spin when the bait hits the water if you're doing it right, hence the thumb.

Sound's like a dumb thumb to me. 

I've never used the magnetic or friction drags to try and stop over run after the lure hits.  Those are to slow the spool down to prevent over run mid flight when throwing baits that loose velocity fairly quickly in the air,  or to compensate for having to cast into the wind.

Jeez guys. The OP said he's had the reel a few years. I'd say he knows something is wrong.

I'm not familiar with that particular reel, but it sounds like the internal adjustment arm isn't being moved when you dial up the magnets. A good indicator would be the adjuster would feel different.

If you're comfortable opening the side plate, look to make sure the magnets move when you're adjusting them. If not, this is the culprit and that part just needs replacing. If they do, check to make sure the race is still glued in place and not spinning. Is should be one or the other.

If you're not comfortable doing this yourself, you can send it to DVT of this site. Most reel repair shops will let you know the cause and cost to fix before doing any repairs if you ask.

Thanks! That would make sense then because it doesn't matter how much I turn up or down the magnets there doesn't seem to be a difference. Thank you papajoe22!

The magnets should move in slightly when you dial up the drag and out when you dial it down.  It's not necessarily a lot of movement but should be enough to notice.  If the reel comes with multiple magnets in the brake carrier, check to see if they are all there.  They can come loose and be lost, and some reels only come with a few of the magnets in place, with some vacant holes.  JMHO, not all reels have a very effective braking system regardless of whether it is magnetic or centrifugal.  It's a design thing.  I have a Revo SX first generation and the mag brakes work just fine on it.  I can't speak about the Silver Max though.  If the reel has been doing the same thing since you got it, I suspect it may just be a design thing and not broken.  But you never know.

Took the side plates off. The magnets move and the race is still intact. When I touch the spool to the magnets when they are all the way up I don't feel an attraction between the magnets and the spool. If the spool were aluminum, which I'm not sure it is or isn't, what would the magnets be attracting to?

 

Also, this has only been a problem recently, I'll say at the beginning of June I noticed it was a bit off but thought my thumb was just being too confident. But now I am really starting to notice the magnets are causing an issue.
