leavinc Posted May 8, 2007 Posted May 8, 2007 Well I should rephrase that..I caught my first bass I was actually trying to catch. Like I said before I used to do alot of Walleye fishing with minnows and would occasionally hook a bass, but this one counts as my first in my book, it felt like I was cheating before. I went to Lake Lizzie just outside of Saint Cloud, FL (where I live). and I was fishing off of a point on the north side of the lake. I was using a motoroil shad 7.5" Culprit worm with a 1/32 oz bullet weight rigged texas style. I casted out to some lily pads and let my worm fall to the bottom. Then I just would twitch my rod then reel in the slack, then twitch some more while slowly reeling in. It seems that just by dragging my worm across the bottom like this it worked. Like I said, I'm totally new to this style of fishing. I actually didn't even purposely set the hook. I thought i was snagged at first so I gave it little jerk when all of a sudden the snag started pulling away from me. Now I knew I had a fish so i reeled in the slack as I let my rod down then gave it another pull just to make sure. One Largemouth later and I'm addicted. I didn't have a scale but I did measure his length - 18 inches. (just wondering what do you think his approx weight would be). He wasn't fat and I'd say he looked about average in girth from the pictures I see on here. I'm going fishing today probably this evening and I hope to catch some more. I just bought a pack of 5" watermelon/black flake senkos and I wanna give them a try because I hear so much about them. Thanks guys, and I can't wait to go fishing!! Quote
Super User David P Posted May 8, 2007 Super User Posted May 8, 2007 Congrats man, sound just like I did when I caught my first bass, it's an amazing feeling.. ... and it only gets better! Quote
FatBoy Posted May 8, 2007 Posted May 8, 2007 Your first real bass and it was 18"? DANG!!! Florida is the place to be (if you can't be in California ) As for the weight, check out the fish weight calculator in the Tacklebox link at the top of the page. It's obviously a rough approximation. But it puts an 18" bass at 3-5. Quote
