Yes, A thread is plenty strong for an 8 wt.  It will look better also.  Finish magnifies so C and D look like rope under a good finish.  ...lol  Anyway, you'd have to be building some real heavy duty rods to need C or D.

As a testimony to how strong A thread is- when I was testing out fly guides for spiral wrapped swimbait rods, I had them wrapped with A...  in trying to get a guide to fail, i broke a XH blank twice, without hurting the guides... and the thread was just fine and it was unfinished.

I have used A on a few rods over 6wt including an 8/9 spey and had no problems.  Like flechero said, it is plenty strong for the amount of work you are going to ask of it.

Thanks much for the feedback. This will be my second build and first fly rod. The first was a 6' graphite Med Fast spinnerbait rod that came out decent. Any advice regarding the fly rod is greatly appreciated.

Do a few guides at a time and then go do something else.  Tying all those guides on such a narrow diameter blank will make you cross-eyed.  Do a few and then come back to it.  Just a suggestion unless time is critical.
