Drewski73 Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 Ive decided after using my shakey head set up all the time for drop shot, that I need a dedicated drop shot set up. Im really interested in the 3 rods Ive mentioned, but am open minded as well. Right now, the Recon 2 is what Im leaning towards. Anybody have experience good or bad with any of these? It needs to be that 4-10lb test range, and 6'9" to 7" long. Thanks Drew Quote

Recons are light on weight however they can be a touch tip heavy. The sensitivity is good on these too plus the rods look good. Not sure I would ever buy another. Not sure how the Gen 2 rods compare but I have a Gen 1 rod. Quote
SDbassin Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 I have a couple avid x's, they are fantastic rods. I have the 7' m/f spinning rod and a few of their baitcasters. I pretty much use all my finesse techniches including drop shot. I don't have any experience with the other rods you mention, but I really love the avid x line, light, sensitive, and I love the split grip design on the rod as well Quote
blckshirt98 Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 I use a Phenix M1 7'2" M/XF or a Shimano Cumara 6'8" M/XF for dropshotting. The M/XF works for me because the tip is light and sensitive and the XF action gets me a quick hookset with a quick reel or short sweep of the rod. For pure dropshotting I probably like the Cumara better but I can do other things with the Phenix where I only want to take one rod with me to the lake. Quote

They have a very light fast tip mated to a substantial Med or ML butt section, what is termed a "hinged" action, and for my money this is the perfect action for a dropshot rod. A couple of the west coast dropshot gurus recommended the Med action rod 6-8 yrs ago and I've enjoyed using it ever since. It's rated for 1/8 oz baits up and will handle 5+ lb fish with ease when called upon. Don't know what Shimano's warranty is these days but my Med action rod came with an over the counter lifetime warranty. They come with Fuji Alconite guides, which I like. Quote

Bob, I too have several of the Gen 1 Cumara Spinning rods. Great rods that look good, are light, well balanced, have great feel, and are build well. I have the 7'2 ML Fast action spinning rod. This rod is good for lighter drop shot rigs IMO lacks power for dropshotting with weights more than 1/4 oz. Now on the other hand I also use and great prefer the 7'2 Medium XF drop shot rod. This is the rod that was specifically designed to drop shot. It is perfect for anything you would want to do with a drop shot. It has tremendous power in but section of the blank. The tip section is light and really allows you to work the bait. Drewski, They also make a 6'8 version of this rod, however both lengths are very tough to find. They generally sell for $140 - $180 but are getting harder to come by. If you find one I suspect you will like it and would be well worth your $. Pairs well with a Stradic CI4 or FJ. Quote
