Hi all, I am in the market for a new jig rod after not being impressed with my duckett ghost. I will be buying from my local bass pro, which does not have a huge selection of rods other than Abu, Berkley, BPS, Duckett. The rods that i know are available are,

  • Abu Veritas: 7' mh or 7'6 mh (mh is heaviest they carry there in this rod)
  • Abu Vendetta: same models as veritas
  • BPS Carbonlite: 7' Hvy or 7'6 Hvy
  • Ghost ( i have the 7'3 hvy and dont like how soft the tip is)

These are the rods/ models that i am looking at and that are in my price range of about 100 I am a fan of a stiffer rod/ extra fast tip, but am also looking for the most sensitivity. so, which of these rods would you choose?

Note: 3/8 - 3/4 jig is what i mostly use

You would be better off with a heavy action rod

??  Actions are moderate, moderate-fast, fast, extra fast, etc.  I am not aware of a heavy action.  I assume you mean a heavy power.  MH or H should depend on lure weight and cover.

OP, can't help with a rod recommendation as I've never fished any of those 4 rods.  I would also suggest keeping an eye on the used market.  Some pretty good deals come up on occasion.  I am going to guess the Veritas will have a stiffer action based on the couple other Abu rod models I have.

Any particular reason you're limiting your options to what that local bps has? What don't you like about the duckett and what's your budget?

reason being is that i like to actually handle the rod before i use it, and i also have a tournament on Saturday and i honestly don't trust shipping  :Idontknow:  . The thing i don't like about my duckett is how how light it is for a heavy, and how it has such a soft tip.

I've had many rods and many expensive rods shipped with no issues. If you order from a reputable retailer nothing to worry. I understand wanting to hold the rod first, but I've also learned it isn't critical, and as you've seen with your Duckett doesn't guarantee satisfaction. I think you're missing out on some great options likely in your price range by limiting to what that BPS has.

I don't have any experience with them myself bc they aren't my cup of tea, but the consensus seems to be that the Abu rods tend to fish a bit on the heavy stiffer side.

If you can see clear to try something shipped the St Croix deal on the Rage rods in their Bargain Room is a great deal and probably has some good options for you.

its not that i am afraid to have rods shipped, I have had it done before, it is mostly that i would like to handle the rod before i use it.

The other options listed in your original post probably won't WOW you much over your Duckett. The Veritas will fish more powerfully or stiffer if you will then the other rods. It may be your best bet out of your options. If it were me, and like "KSchultz" noted you would better served ordering one online. Never had an issue with rods coming from about 5 different reputable dealers. 90% of the rods I fish I purchase sight unseen or blind. With the help of trusted individuals and enough research you can make the right decision. To help further it would be nice to know your max budget... but guessing around $150?
