Freshwater Lures, Rod And Reel To Salt Water Fishing

Hello,

I am going to flordia for vacation and was wondering if I could use my lures, rod, and reel for the salt water. Ive heard it messes it up when using it with salt water. So my question is can I use it for like the canal and will I get a bite using my lures I use for bass as well as my rod and reel? and will it mess up my rod and reel?

No, you will be fine rod and reel wise as long as you clean them before and after. Tackle is a little different though, I have had the split rings and hooks be totally fine, and others corrode and rust to hell, so I wouldn't want to be takeing any mega-bass lures or anything expensive like that. How well bass lures work in salt water isn't my expertise as for I fish live bait almost exclusively; however I have caught redfish and trout on flukes, and have caught mackerel and bluefish on spoons, cranks, and topwater. I have only fished a small canal a handful of times so I don't know about there, but on the ocean some stuff will work. Hope this is helpfull have a nice trip!

I have saltwater rods and reels but 95% of the time, I end up using bass gear at the coast.  A 7" MH spinning rod, a 2500 size reel with 20 lb braid and some 20 lb leader material is my preferred setup for surf fishing.  It handles fish up to 15-20 lb just fine.  Further inshore, a lighter power spinning setup with 8-10 lb line will do just fine.  It's a good idea to rinse down your rod and reel every day with fresh water after using them in salt water.  Same for any lures you use.  I use baitcasters 90% of the time at home but it's often windy at the NC coast, so spinning gear is a big plus there.

I live at the coast. Spinnerbaits will work, flukes and jerkbaits will work, grubs will work, spoons are always good, and flukes work well also. RINSE EVERYTHING DOWN and be careful about accisentally getting sand in your reel, especially if you use bait casters.

I fish more salt than fresh..... And I use regular bass gear to do so. 7'mh/f rod and shimano cu200 reels. 15# yzhybrid. I fish this out of my kayak 95% of the time. My top producing lures are all " bass lures" as well. Spook one knocker, gold spoon, flukes.

These presentations will catch most of the fish you want to catch,( trout, redfish,Snook,flounder, mackeral) and less of the fish you may not want to deal with, ( catfish, sharks, stingrays, baitsnatching pinfish)..

For straight " just want to catch something" fun.... Get some 3/16-1/4 oz jig heads and a couple packs of gulp shrimp. Or live shrimp..... Whichever youre in to. You can add a popping cork to this rig as well to get up off the bottom and catch more speckled trout.

I went to BPS at Myrtle Beach and asked for whatever trout, redfish and flounder will bite. They walked me over to the Johnson Silver Minnow in gold and then to the Gulp mullet. I caught two flounder on the spook with the mullet grub as a trailer.

For vacation purpose I wouldn't worry about anything.   For sure rinse after you're outing, if by the beach sand is your worst enemy.  Bass lures are fine, I wouldn't worry about rust too much, except on the hooks.  I might be more concerned being cut off from a mackerel or cuda.
