Hey everyone I'm on a budget with this one. I've got a spinning reel sitting around and need a decent rod for shaky head fishing. Does anyone know if a rod between 40-60 bucks would be worth it or should I wait and find a little higher quality? Specifically looking for a 6'6" Medium-Fast rod.

I would wait and get something higher end for shakyheads.

Like Blue said it's going to be hard to find anything of quality in the $40-60 range. I actually spent $80 on an Abu Garcia Vendetta 6'6" M that handles a shaky head very well, but no cork grips. That's likely one of the least expensive rods you're going to find that can fish one well.

Hang on for a bit, ICAST just got done and there were new rods introduced so there will be some clearance sales going on. A lot of times you can get a steal if you just wait a bit and keep your eyes open. Now, the Abu Garcia Verdict isn't a bad rod, it has that extending handle feature that a lot of anglers didn't care for but the rod is actually decent. Anyway, on Fisherman's Factory outlet (FFO) they have a 6'9" ML-F Verdict for $53.88, the ML verdict is more like a medium power from other manufactures, this will work great for shaky heads and is within your budget and the best part is you don't have to wait around.

I would think that a Berkley Lightning rod from Walmat would suit your needs.  Last time I was there they had several different actions. Late 90's and early 2000's, these were my rod of choice.  I still have 4 or 5 spinning rods in different lengths that I use as loaner rods.  Of course there are better rods out there - but they all cost more.   If you ever get to the KC Metro area, Rogers Lures in Liberty has several models in the Fenwick HMG class that retail for right around a hundred dollars.   The AETOS line is in the $160 neighborhood.  The Fenwick HMX line costs somewhat less then the HMG.  The value of the HMG or AETOS lines is the limited lifetime warranty - which for 10 bucks they send you a new rod when you break your old one.  There area few hoops to jump through in this process.

You're in Nebraska - Cabelas HQ is in Nebraska - somewhere close to Omaha I believe.  Go  there and see what they have in the bargain cave at your price point.  That would be option #2.

I've checked the bargain cave and all I ever find in there are broken off rod tips! It's unfortunate because there are some very nice rods just unusable without coughing up more money to get em fixed properly. I'm heading up to Okoboji soon so I'll check out the Fishermans Factory Outlet up there and see what they got. Appreciate the help guys. I'll just keep an eye out for clearance prices!

How about check checking Cabela's online Bargain Cave?  They have like 40 rods up there now, maybe something will fit what you're looking for.
