Super User MarkH024 Posted July 20, 2015 Super User Posted July 20, 2015 2)willing to wear their young arms out throwin this thing all day Try throwing a Cowgirl (bucktail) with #10's for musky. It's like cranking a drift sock through the water. That will make the Deps 250 feel like you're throwing a VIsion 110. 2 Quote

I'd venture a guess that the prices of Dadson blades currently are more offensive than ANY swimbait. 1 Quote
stkbassn Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 Never spent 250 on a bait and won't until I get a Megabass rod or two. I'm saving for those. I've spent nearly $150. There is a bait that I'm buying within the next two weeks that's $90 though...and I won't lose it Quote
thomas15 Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 I caught more bass and other fish on the bomber FAT A and model A crankbaits. rapala f7 blue or black, inline spinners, spinflys and spinnerbaits. I purchased a $2 orange spook a off the wall brand and caught many bass with it the next day. Success is choosing the right bait, the right size the right color along with the correct presentation. My favorite presentation is slow. Add a shot of bass scent and your good to go. I have a box of experience cranks that were bragged to be so good they caught weeds only. That live target baitball catches zip, nada, nothin. Now I'm going to buy a $250 lure? I'll out fish it with a bomber crank. Does that lure come with a boat? Lol I do not fish with expensive over priced stuff. Give me a $15 old time real BASS rod with a fin-nor spinning reel. I just purchased ten lews spinning rods. I'll try them. So far not bad. I maybe too frugal. We grew up poor I had to rake leaves and cut grass to buy fishing stuff. To me a 202 zebco was the top of the line. Then in my 20's I used the D.A.M. QUICK spinning reels. There wasn't much out there besides the Mitchell 300. I had those too. The Garcia five star rods? You guys got it made today. As a kid, I had a paper route and mowed grass. This allowed me to buy myself a Mitchell 308 and a 5' Garcia Conolon 5 Star. This was for trout, panfish and I used it in the salt water marinia near our house for snappers and blowfish. This was about 1970 ish. My brother also had a paper route and he had a Quick 110 and a Conolon 2 star. These were quite the rig at the time, especially for kids to have. I don't know what ever happened to that rod/reel. Lost track of it, I think someone took it from our garage but really not sure. I'm in the market for a reel for a 5'6" medium rod and think I'm gonna get a new 308. Quote
CDMeyer Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 I would buy them but not now as a college student!! Quote
Rhino68W Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 Nah, i'll pass. I would rather put that money towards an entire new tackle set haha. But then again, I don't use swimbaits anyways. Quote

You know your old when some of your fishing stuff you still use sometimes is antique. 1 Quote
Heron Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 Hah, Im gonna have to go ahead and sayyyyy........No. I prefer to keep my fishing at a recreational level, therefore my absolute top ceiling allowable price for a single bait, for any fish species, is about $40. And even the thought of that, gives me gas cramps. Even then, I typically choose not to go much over $15 for a single bait. 1 Quote
Super User Cgolf Posted July 20, 2015 Super User Posted July 20, 2015 No way in WI, it would end up being a Musky/pike bait and would need a steel leader because of that. I would guess that the leader might have an impact on the action of the bait which would defeat the purpose of buying it. Quote
rboat Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 I would have to say no. I do have some baits that were costly but nothing close to that price. I am sure they work in the right place and time, but if they were magic, every pro who fishes for a living on the tournament trail would be throwing that lure, and they do not. Quote

I used the Glide Swimmer with a Titanium leader up in Northern Minnesota and had no problems. Worked fine 1 Quote
Super User K_Mac Posted July 21, 2015 Super User Posted July 21, 2015 Buy and use what you want, you only have to justify it to your self (provided it's not detrimental to your family finances). I haven't spent big bucks on individual baits yet since I haven't really got into swimbaits just yet....But I have a fair amount of Megabass baits and my rods/reels are what many consider high end. Honestly though, a $250 bait is just a drop in the bucket if I felt the need to justify it to myself (one of them anyway, a boat full would be a different story ). Boat, motor, truck, rods/reels, tackle, gas, travel and lodging expenses, tournament entries, and last but not least - my time...Put all that together and it's already a huge commitment and expense, adding a high end bait to the mix isn't going make or break it. If I didn't love it and wasn't 100% committed to it I would even spend a fraction of the time or money. Very well said. 1 Quote

I was in 7th grade at the time I bought it and was very proud of it. Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted July 21, 2015 Super User Posted July 21, 2015 If I was as dedicated to fishing big baits as people like Wayne, then I'd have no problem spending that much. I have some big baits now, but I haven't broken the $100 mark yet. I also still haven't exactly put the time in to learn the ones I have. Until I master those I don't have a need to spend that much on a single bait. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted July 21, 2015 Super User Posted July 21, 2015 I'm fortunate enough to be able to buy pretty much what I want. I wouldn't spend $40 on a lure let alone $250. I'm not on this big lure bandwagon for reasons other than expense. My freshwater fishing is not conducive for larger swimbaits, don't want to use the required rod size to launch those bigger baits for what I consider smaller fish. Sure a 8-10# bass is a great bass and a nice trophy but it's still only 10#. As a recreational fisherman there for just the fun of it, I can catch bass in that size range on lighter gear, I find that to be more fun. Even a 5-6# bass on a ul or light power rod is pretty darn good in my book. I do toss some 2-3oz lures for species that can easily exceed 10 pounds, my success rate is no better than if I were using a 3/4 oz bucktail for a few bucks or a jerk shad on a jig head. The bigger bait serves 1 purpose for me, that's just to do something different, it's not a big fish guarantee for me. 2 Quote
Neil McCauley Posted July 21, 2015 Posted July 21, 2015 I've lost too many lures to underwater rocks and stumps or outright line breaks to spend $250 on one. Have lost about $50 worth this season already and I'm pretty good about getting lures unstuck and preventing line failures. It just happens sometimes. Lures are always going to be semi-disposable items. Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted July 21, 2015 Super User Posted July 21, 2015 As with cars, just because someone has a $250 lure or a $60K boat doesn't mean they're better off than you. Usually, quite the opposite is true. I draw the line at $50 for what I'll spend without notifying my wife unless it's a gift for her. I don't have to, I just do so I can maintain my self-respect as a hubby and dad. I don't recall her ever saying to me "Don't buy that!" I also agonize over big $$$ purchases so long the urge to buy it usually passes. Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted July 21, 2015 Super User Posted July 21, 2015 I'm happy with the responses. Perhaps the price will come down some now. LOL 1 Quote
Super User MarkH024 Posted July 21, 2015 Super User Posted July 21, 2015 I caught my PB musky a few weeks ago on Deps 175 SS. It's intended for bass, it obviously works on musky. I've caught bass on my musky gear so it's all relative......it's fishing. Was the $55 I spent on the Deps worth it? Yes, it caught a lifetime memory for me and probably more to come. I have swimbaits that are retailed twice as much as that, and guys like Speed have plenty more than me. What people spend on their hobby is of no concern to the next guy in line. I work hard for my gear. If I had the means to buy $250 lures, I sure would if it made me happy and brought confidence to the boat. There are plenty of musky lures out there as well that are $300+ . I've even seen in person lures that go for over $700 in that market. Bass are not the only species that have these "high dollar" lure markets. The high price on lures usually comes from the hand craftsman ship and limited availability. Fish whats right for you. It's all about the memories. We only live once! 2 Quote
