Finally Happened......

Unhooking a nice LMB today and he shivered and buried a Rat-L-Trap treble all the way to the hilt in my finger.  That felt good.  Luckily, there was a guy pretty close the helped me with the fish and then helped me load up my boat. for the trip to the ER.  First time in 10 years of Bass fishing I had to have one extracted.  Don't usually get them in THAT far.

I need to buy a gripper so it doesnt happen to me. Its just a matter of time. Wonder what the best ones are ?

I've hooked myself pretty good but never quite that bad yet...it's only a matter of time though I'm sure.

I had it happen one time and that one time was enough for me. Now no matter what if I catch a fish on a treble hook I grab him by the belly and remove the hook with pliers, even if he is barely hooked.

Yeah if I started throwing cranks and jerks a lot, I'd get a gripper. My Grandma got a baitholder hook imbedded in her calf when we took the whole family fishing......15 minutes of "Grandpa surgery" later, the hook was out. She was in a ton of pain. Not fun!

My dad once hurried a treble hook hurried to the hilt in his palm last summer. He now fishes with fingerless gloves and is hook shy as all get out. We pulled it out right there, he drank a coke and kept fishing. He said he could feel it pull on the muscle in his hand, but magically the hook came out clean. He did take himself in for a Tetnis shot that evening just to be safe though. Hope that your hand feels better. Gloves, hook removers, and pliers have been huge additions to his box, so far so good, I would recommend that, as well as barbless hooks on treble baits. Hope you feel better so you can get out and boat more fish!

A couple months back I stuck a treble hook deep into my index finger (big dummy).

I pulled on the lure with all my might, but it was hooked on so much flesh that it wouldn't rip out.

I then pushed the hook-point all the way through my finger, snipped it off with wire cutters, then backed out the hook.

There was virtually no pain, but I felt sorry for my wife who was wincing with sympathetic pain 

I smeared some Polysporin on the puncture and went back to fishing.

Exactly what happened to me as well.. hook straight thru the thumb.. couldnt get it out.. finally yanked it.. hit a ligament of some kind ..lucky to have healed after months

This ran right up through the middle of my finger.  There was no way to get at the barb or I would have cut it off myself and pulled it out.  I normally wear a glove on my left hand and I ALWAYS use some very stout forceps to remove trebles.  I had neither today.  That WON'T happen again.  Gonna try cutting the barbs off one or two crankbaits and see how they work.  If I don't start losing fish, I may do it to all of them.

I learned long ago to use pliers and grab the hook first then lip them.takes pratice but after a while you can do it just as easy as lipping them

The worst I've had was a spinner that went under my fingernail that went past the barb. I just grit my teeth and ripped it out. It's times like that that I'm very glad to have high pain tolerance.

I mostly fish from a kayak and mainly use crankbaits. I hooked and landed a dink pike and made the mistake of putting him near my lap he thrashes and hooks my nutsack. had to push it thru

Whenever I land a treble hooked catch I use my bps lipper gripper, can't beat it for the price and I don't get hooked anymore

I've made that trip to the ER, couldn't push the hook thru as the barb was in the joint of my thumb.  I'm very careful with bass now.

Been hooked a few other times while fishing the surf, hard to control a flopping bluefish or ladyfish.  Hooked in the leg I was able to push it thru but the #1 4x hook was stronger than my wire cutter.  Luckily I had passerbys that had better leverage and pressed the barb down.   Odds are it will happen again.

Me too recently. Been lipping bass 20 years without a problem til then. I use gloves and grab behind the head now if it has trebles. Having a ticked off 4lb fish connected to a size no. 2 hook in your thumb really teaches a lesson.

I stuck myself with a crank bait once a few years ago.  The treble was buried in my thumb.  I took my fishing pliers and pulled it out and I still remember the pop it made...ouch.  If it happens again I'll use the braided line around the hook and push down method.

Last night I had to lip a 5 lb'er that had only one hook of a Spook under his jaw, none inside the mouth. I wanted badly to land that sucker, weigh it and get a pic because I knew it was a good fish. But that thing was peeling some drag and I could see the other 5 hooks flying around looking for some fingers to bury themselves in. I finally wore it out. My buddies were in a Bass Tracker watching the thing spin me around in circles. When I brought it to hand it still had its mouth shut and I had to wrestle it to get it open.

 

To this day, after 35+ years fishing, I've never gotten a hook barb deep.

You better find something wooden to knock on after that comment. I've had it several times as recently as last year, it sucks every time.

I went to the ER some years ago to get a hook removed. Now I am very careful with treble hooks. If it is a big bass I let it fight until it is tired. If the bass is small I will hold it around the middle until I can lip it.
