Hi all. I'm interested in putting together a rig for crank baits, mainly large ones for deep water (eg 6XD to 10XD).

What types of rod/reel/line would you recommend? Baitcaster is preferred. I'm looking for types (eg 5.4 gear ratio baitcaster on a 6'9" MM rod with 12 lbs mono). Brands would be a bonus. My budget is $200-$250.

Thank you in advance.

Saying the most your willing to spend is $250: I'd probably go daiwa tatula 5.4:1 ($100 on Amazon) for reel and 14 or 16 lb mono for line, if your going to be using 10xds. Rod is a little harder. With $150 or so remaining, there's not a lot of deep cranking rods out there that will handle the 10xd for that price. Your best bet will probably be the *** *** black crankenstein. It will handle the baits you mentioned fine. Good luck!

6'9" m/m is too short and too soft IMO for those baits.  You need a longer rod and MH/M.  The 6xd and 10xd are heavy resistance baits.

I just scored a deep cranking setup for a little over $250.

Rod: cabelas tournament zx crankshaft 7'5" mh (3/8-1 1/2 oz lure rating)

Reel: shimano chronarch 200e5 (on sale for $150)

Line: trilene xt 10lb

Haven't tried a 10xd, which is slightly above the rod's weight rating, but there's a 7'10" (rated for 5/8-2 1/4 oz) which I imagine would be better suited for the 10xd and even the 8xd. This Rod does handle the dt 14 well, and seems to be a great rod for those 3/4 and 1 oz cranks. This setup casts a country mile! I'd buy this setup again in a heartbeat if it were lost or stolen.

I would go with a Tatula 5.4:1 and a Halo Fishing X Tra Deep Crankin' Rod. It is 7'10" and XH, but not a broomstick. Go with 12 pound Gamma Fluoro or Abraz X.

My deep crank setup is a Curado 200I and a Halo Fishing 7'10" MH Crankin' Rod. Then again, I don't throw baits bigger than a 6xd.

That new Shimano Crucial deep cranker would be ideal for 10xd's. Check it out. It was just released at iCast.

In my opinion, a different setup is required for a 6XD than with a 10xd.

Thanks for the input, gents. You've given me a few options I have not considered.

Unfortunately, it looks like my plans will be set back a bit. I made a bad cast on my last trip out and my favorite jig rod met my trolling motor at high velocity. Long story short, I'm in the market for a new jig rod ... One without a broken eye!

In the mean time, I'm definitely going to look into some of the suggestions you guys made. Very much appreciated.

Cheers

my deep cranking setup was rather cheap and works great for me. i picked up a daiwa lexa 4.9:1 on TW for $60 and put it on the powell diesel 705cb glass rod. $140 setup that works great IMO

7'4 - 7'6 mojo bass Glass rod. And whatever lb test like the crankbait companies suggest. Flourocarbon
