Hi does anyone else watch this show on espn I like the idea of weighing the fish and releasing it on the spot hypothetically speaking if these fish were on thier nests and it was spawn would this practice help or hurt the fish population? And also does anyone one here use this type of format in thier club? I was in a "inches" tourney once and liked it especially the guy with 5 bass that totalled 104 inches!!!!!!!! Holy Zoom U-Tail!!!!!!

The practice would probably help slightly, even though the number of bass brought to the scale during a bass tourney vs the total breeding population would be a very minimal percent so it's probably close to a draw. 

There are a few paper weight tournaments around here. Basically you keep track of the number of fish you caught and the length and that's converted to a weight by a chart. If you catch a legal bass that's heavier than the statistical weight, you can bring it in to weight it to get the full weight. It's a great idea for small clubs where everyone knows everyone and you know nobody is going to cheat. For bigger clubs, I think the live weigh in is the best. Not that people still can't cheat, but it's harder. Plus, as a fellow angler I enjoy seeing how everyone else did vs looking a a piece of paper.

I do really like the MLF format much more than 

the other televised tourneys.

 

Feels more competitive with live updates, etc.

 

And I like them releasing the fish on the spot and

getting penalized for mishandling the catch.

I agree with Darren, I like the fact they have to use their hands to land the fish. Cant cradle it against your body or it is a 2 minute penalty. It is the most exciting format that I have seen in a fishing show. Its also cool how they show how each winner fished and what they used and how they used them. That is usually a 1 hour show in itself.

I dont have the opportunity to fish tournaments but if I did I would love this format, pays off to catch quantities as well as quality.

They do CPR tourneys for Kayak guys around here. It would be interesting if they used the Score Tracker app and scales. Wonder how they would keep people honest... But I guess you can't do that in a photo tourney either if you can't monitor them on their boat. Maybe a roaming boat?

 MLF is my favorite tournament fishing show.   I would like to buy some of their DVD sets they have for sale on their site.  It might be fun to watch them in the cold winter months.

MLF format and rules are great but it's a made for TV product. The same format won't translate to the everyday tournament.

Totally agree, MLF is my favorite tournament fishing show.  Ultimate Match Fishing is kind of cool, having 2 pros fishing together out of the same boat.  They don't know each other's exact weights but can see every fish the opponent catches and have a pretty good idea. And they know exactly where and how they are catching fish. In UMF though, I can't stand Fish Fishburne (Joe Thomas is alright, but certainly no Marty Stone) and the referee is just obnoxious. And they get to practice ahead of time. And I cringe every time these guys flip a bass in.  Totally legal as long as it's flopping around on their side of the boat.  Ugh...

Anyone knows why Extended Cast is not available anymore?

Probably because they've sold all the broadcasting rights to whoever it's being broadcast by. Real shame for me as I don't live in the US and have no other way of watching. Really enjoyed the e casts and was happy to spend $30 a year to watch it.

 

It's a business decision, but possibly not a brilliant one. Time will tell.

We used somewhat of an MLF style format for our Thursday night tournaments last year, except it was still the standard 5 biggest fish. Everyone was required to use the same scale to weigh their fish so they could be released right after being caught. It worked well and was a really good time. It was mostly guys off the forum and their buddies to help with the obvious potential for someone to fib about their weights.

It's good to see MLF back on television.  From the schedule it looks like they are going to have new shows all through January and February which suits me fine since I will be stuck in the house most of the time when not working because of the winter weather.

best part about the MLF is watching the guys in the back of the pack start to sweat about how the guys in the front are catching them.... the live updates and everything make it more of a mental game that one would imagine.  

i also agree with DVT that it is a made for TV type of format.  having that "marshall" in each and every boat evens the field, but is not very likely in a local or club type tournament.
