Nashua Nev Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 my thinking is only for finding fish and structure and getting the best read of what is there. no gps needed , no linking to another unit needed. -- i know they will probably have it anyway, but just for overall fish and structure finding and looking. best image , and we are talking large and small mouth lake and river fishing. no need for 200 feet down. just opinions from people who own and use them as recreational fishermen like most if us here, and i am guessing opinions will vary. negatives and positives 7 inch screen ? 9 inch ? Super User Wayne P. Posted July 16, 2015 Super User Posted July 16, 2015 You will not find a new unit with a 9" display for under $1000 You will not find a unit that has the side looking imaging technology that does not have GPS/mapping. If you want the largest display stand-alone unit available with Down Imaging, Side Imaging, traditional sonar (2D) and GPS/ mapping for under $1000, that will be the 7" display Humminbird Helix 7 SI GPS due to be on the market in September. It was also awarded the "Best in Show" for electronics at ICAST this week. MSRP $699.99---less at a marine electronics dealer. Quote

" no linking to another unit needed" Quote
Comfortably Numb Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 Not sure what you are saying Wayne 73sv is 2d di si and gps. Comes with everything you need. 9" screen 93sv is only $1200 which is the real bargain Quote
Nashua Nev Posted July 17, 2015 Author Posted July 17, 2015 great info Thank You. Just gathering insight from people with personal experience with different units.. Likes , dislikes , wants , etc. ( i have no use for the gps or the link capability but it looks like all higher end units have it. ) easibilty of use , P.I.A stuff . size matters. i am thinking 7 inch minimum Quote

" no linking to another unit needed" Not sure what you mean. It can be linked to another unit but it is a stand alone unit. And if it's a great unit from what I've heard from others and seen on the water on a friend of mines boat. SE Kansas grass grower Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted July 17, 2015 Super User Posted July 17, 2015 Standalone is the term used for units that cannot be linked to other units. That is what the Helix 5 and 7 series are. It is $300 less than the other two units that can be linked to other units. Quote
Comfortably Numb Posted July 18, 2015 Posted July 18, 2015 I think only waypoints can be shared on the Garmin Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted July 18, 2015 Super User Posted July 18, 2015 When I was shopping this past winter, I had the same mentality as you... "I don't need GPS" but GPS is much more that just MAPPING technology... The best part about GPS on a SI unit is the ability to make a subject ANYWHERE on you screen, and it creates a waypoint that you go back to with GPS accuracy... I hardly EVER use mapping... the GPS on an SI unit is what makes the SI units so versitle. I agree. GPS works the same with or without any map background. You can change mapping products and the GPS data remains the same. Quote
