Nothing like getting a new Shimano spinning reel. Like gold to me! Here is how I control the bait monkey - get depressed. Yeah, I'm depressed that no matter how many different lures I buy, it's all not going to increase my big bass rate. It's taken a few years but its sunk in - I already have enough soft plastics to last a decade or more and plenty of hard baits. Buying more is not going to increase my odds of catching big ones. still, I need three or four more Shimano reels and more rods! 1 Quote
BassTravis Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 I introduced my wife to fishing topwater lures for LMB. Within 10 minutes, she was HOOKED!!! I've had to buy her 4 baitcasters and rods, tackle box, and lures. Every time the boat is loaded to go fishing, she's with me. And that's usually 3-4 times a week. I've VERY fortunate to have my soulmate as my fishing partner. AND, she's outfished me on several occasions. The bait monkey lives in our spare bedroom. 2 Quote

Super User SirSnookalot Posted July 19, 2015 Super User Posted July 19, 2015 If anything I've reduced my lure arsenal. I buy for replacement as needed, pretty much stick with same lures. Although I have a few reels that I may replace in time, the burning desire hasn't reached the level of researching to buy, I'm good with rods too. I catch fish each time out with good performing equipment, see no need to spend when I don't need to. Quote

There are 100's to choose from and people often get caught up buying all of these new discs. My mentality has always been, it is the archer, not the arrow. I am hoping I can use this same mentality. Just learning that Gander Mountain and Cabellas carry Structure Bugs but NOT in summer craw:( I settled for Bama Craw. Anyway, I just give in. The intervention didn't work - all it accomplished was that I promised to cut back ... Then ICAST happened (again) and I found myself pre-ordering some new soft plastics - but ONLY in Green Pumpkin and Junebug I swear !! ... In all truth, there is no avoiding the bait monkey. You can only prepare for him. Save your money, buy what you need when it is on sale, and try not to do something that causes buyers remorse. Quote
basswrangler83 Posted July 26, 2015 Posted July 26, 2015 My budget alone helps keep it at bay pretty well. My budget normally limits me to around $50/month for fishing gear. It forces me to really think on if i really need a new rod or reel since i have to wait a bit to get one. I normally stick with replenishing items i already have and use, my go to and confidence stuff. I dont venture out to new items anymore unless its something a trusted better fisherman shows me, not a sponsored guy either. I'm on a $20 a month budget and I mainly replace lures, hooks and what-not. I rely on birthdays and Christmas to replace rods and reels. I fish usually once a week so I don't go through a ton of lures. Quote

I just use a single distance driver, and then buy a new one when the woods eats it... Lol Quote
