I started a thread awhile ago stating that I had really met all my equipment needs for fishing and hunting. Months later now I can say I still have no bait monkey cravings. I finally went fishing this year for the first time. Crazy, I know. But I got a new house and other things have kept me from fishing.

I took out of storage a box of fishing lures that I had ordered from Tackle Warehouse last fall and had never opened it. It was the last group of lures that I really wanted to order. It was nice opening that box today. Felt like Christmas Day.

In it was:

- Cavitrons Buzzbaits x3 (can never have enough of those)

- Replacement Skirts x2

- Zoom Superhogs x2

- D&M Double Hammer Buzzbaits x2

- Ima Rattling Roumba x2

- Ima Skimmer x2

It's actually a lot of lures. lol. I'm like, "Wow, I must of spent a bundle." lol. I did order it on their 20% off sale, so that was nice.

So, I guess one of the ways to keep the Bait Monkey away is to order some lures in the fall and when you receive them put them away and don't open them until the spring. That way you feel like you went shopping and spent money and at that time, you haven't spent any money, it was spent awhile ago.

Even though I didn't need to feed the Bait Monkey, I will most likely be able to keep him at bay for another year. I have lures that are still in their boxes that need to be used.

My budget alone helps keep it at bay pretty well. My budget normally limits me to around $50/month for fishing gear. It forces me to really think on if i really need a new rod or reel since i have to wait a bit to get one. I normally stick with replenishing items i already have and use, my go to and confidence stuff. I dont venture out to new items anymore unless its something a trusted better fisherman shows me, not a sponsored guy either.

You can't really avoid him - only hope is to control him

My friend, the longer I do this, the more I realize:

The only way to control the bait monkey is to quit fishing altogether.

The only way I can control him is by fishing. I still spend money on some stuff during the year, but a lot of my purchases come during the hard water season when I have the urge to fish but can't. I end up spending hours online looking at new stuff, or things I want and usually I pull the trigger.

I find fishing season helps a lot. In the winter I have nothing but time to look back at the previous season, and it gets me thinking about the up and coming season. This leads me to confuse I want with I need. During the fishing season I concentrate on replacing items, but the orders are not like those in the fall or winter. I just placed my first order since the season started in May and it was only $60, and was limited to strictly to replacing items I have lost.

Having no money is an easy way to avoid him. Plus, I hate to tell you, but it doesn't sound like you avoided him. You still bought the lures, you just done it in the fall. He still got you, you're just letting yourself believe you have defeated him.

On more than one occasion, I placed an online tackle order

while an unopened box was sitting on my desk from the previous order.

I know...I am one sick puppy!

In my own defense though, I am working on Bait Monkey control

Today, I will not place any tackle orders   :Sumo:

Since I had to replace several lures, terminal tackle, and all my rods that were lost over the years I was literally attacked by that bait monkey this past spring.  It was a multi-headed monkey.

Lately though I'm pretty much settled back into my old ways (ie, being broke most of the time haha), and have tamed that monkey quite a bit :)

Let your spouse have your credit cards

Beat me to It lol.

I was gonna say run all your plans to spend on fishing gear to your significant other/spouse and let her scare the bait monkey away!

Works for me at least hahah

I guess I'm lucky in that my girlfriend enjoys fishing, she also doesn't even mind relaxing on the bank while I fish beside her.  And we're moving in together this upcoming fall in Colorado :)

Of course, I'll have to supply her with plenty of baits and tackle, so that will be the next return of the bait monkey...never ever in my wildest dreams did I think I'd have a bait monkey enabler as my soul mate :)

For me it is my kid going to college this fall, the bait monkey will be held in check for a while. My wife will get me a 50 buck gift card to cover the TW 25 days of Xmas sale and my in laws and parents will hook me up with the essentials that I used up over the season. Not sure what will happen when she is done with school though, have to be careful that I don't suffer from rebound shopping lol.

I tried monkey porn for a while and it does work.  The problem is it gets expensive adding to his library all the time (he doesn't like reruns). I decided to stop buying and use the money I'm saving on fishing gear.. :Idontknow:

Like little Al sez about the bait monkey in the: "Godfather" movie : "I try to leave ... and then they suck me right back in again " !!

There is no escaping the bait monkey - it's also like the "BORG" referance from "Star Trek" :  ... "Resistance is futile" !!
