dam0007 Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 Hey guys when I'm close quarters flipping I've typically used Zoom brush hogs, recently tried the Yum version and they work just as good IMO. Tried RI Sweet Beavers for the first time the other day and using Trokar flipping hook, after bumping into weeds a few dozen times the point starts making its way through and I'm pulling up weeds. I use the rage bug for distance pitching and typical Texas rig scenarios. Are there any Beaver style baits that hold up better like the Zoom stuff you guys use? Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted July 16, 2015 Super User Posted July 16, 2015 Missle bait D-bomb. 5 Quote
Gungun96 Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 Gamblers "why not" is a great pitching bait. It's definitely worthy of a try. Great color selection and durability. Also, as mentioned above you cant go wrong with missile baits D bomb. 1 Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted July 16, 2015 Super User Posted July 16, 2015 I don't think it's the bait - it may be the hook. Trokar hooks are by design going to work through the bait faster. It's a good thing for hook ups but a bad thing for no bite bait longevity. I like the hooks just not that aspect of them. You may want to consider another brand with a more traditional hook point instead of one with that cutting leading front edge. A-Jay 3 Quote
War Eagle 44 Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 This is just my personal opinion but I think the D-Bomb blows the Sweet Beaver out of the water in every possible way. The only area the Sweet Beaver has an advantage is color selection. Don't get me wrong I still have quite a few Sweet Beaver baits in my boat and still fish them so I'm not trying to say that they're a garbage bait I'm simply trying to convey just how much I think of the D-Bomb. Kidflex Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 D bombs fished with regular point hooks hold up better than most beaver style baits. I get many catches with each bait. Those ribs hold hooks well and hook point can be repositioned a lot. Trokar hooks cut the plastics way too easy. Main reason I stopped using them. Quote

Rhino68W Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 Havoc Pit boss is a decent one. I can use 1 for multiple fish if it's rigged right. I normally use super glue to secure the top if it to the eyelet of the hook to prevent it from sliding up and wearing out the hole in it. Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted July 16, 2015 Global Moderator Posted July 16, 2015 I use Sweet Beavers almost exclusively with an Owner Twist Lock hook. I really don't have an inordinate amount of piercing through at all. No more or less than a D Bomb that I use only as a change up. And I do a LOT of flipping, pitching and punching. Mike Quote

I got some trokars cause of the hype and I am noticing the same thing about them cutting through the bait easy. I think I will go to the owners. To O/P I use beavers, ugly otters and KVD Rodents Quote

I don't think they sell any without it, but I thought I would mention it. Mike Quote

BW208 Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 What is it about the D bombs that you guys like so much? What hook do you use with them? Quote
Super User fishballer06 Posted July 16, 2015 Super User Posted July 16, 2015 What is it about the D bombs that you guys like so much? What hook do you use with them? They work well. They hold up fairly well. They're fairly cheap. They come in great colors. 3/0-4/0 wide gap worm hook. 1 Quote
Super User buzzed bait Posted July 16, 2015 Super User Posted July 16, 2015 D bombs.... because they just work.... not certain what the color name is, but the ones that are brownish on one side and like purpleish/blueish on the other are killer around here.... Quote
Super User Senko lover Posted July 16, 2015 Super User Posted July 16, 2015 Wow, surprised no one has mentioned any Rage baits. The Rage Craw is a killer bait for me. Took out the Rage Bug for the first time today and caught 8 bass flipping and fishing cover. Awesome baits. Have 9 bags of them coming in the mail tomorrow. Quote
Kidflex Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 Do u use a J hook or offset wide gap.I use a mustad mega bite offset hook. 3/0 & 4/0 Quote

He asked about durability, and the Rage baits are great baits, but aren't my number 1 choice for durability. Havoc plastic is pretty stiff, gives it lots of action though and they hold up great! So my recommendation for you is the Pit Boss. They are also about as cheap as Zoom. Not supposed to be scented, some bags have a kind of scent to them that's not the typical plasticy smell of Zoom, so I don't know whether or not they are scented. Quote
dam0007 Posted July 17, 2015 Author Posted July 17, 2015 I use a mustad mega bite offset hook. 3/0 & 4/0 I have those too. However since I started using the J hooks I have yet to have a bad hookset. Pit Bosses seem to have the same durability as the Beavers. But I don't split apart the "paddle" on the Beavers, I keep it one main piece/flap. Quote
wisconsin heat Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 That D-bomb just straight up catches them. I just purchased some Z-man turbo craws that are made of elaztech, only fished it for a little bit, but I like what I see, I did catch one on it first time out too. Those Z-man plastics are ridiculously durable if you haven't tried any yet. They are stretchy and unlike traditional plastic. If durability is a concern, I'd give one of the elaztech baits a try. Quote
blckshirt98 Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 The Elaztech baits are like rubber bands and will last a long time, just remember not to store them with any other kind of plastics or they'll basically melt (literally just melt from some weird chemical reaction). Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted July 17, 2015 Super User Posted July 17, 2015 The pit boss gets the nod for me, but I need to dry some D - bombs it sounds like. 1 Quote
War Eagle 44 Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 I'm using the Owner Zo Wire Twistlock flipping hook. Best flipping hook I've found bar none. My bite to land ratio increased 2X as soon as I started using this hook. I also get more flips in a days fishing with this hook because I'm not having to stop fishing to readjust my plastic every ten minutes. The Zo Wire is stronger than the usual steel used for hooks so therefore Owner is able to keep the diameter smaller on these hooks without giving up any strength. This is good because the slightly thinner wire of this flipping hook as compared to its competitors makes getting good penitration on the set easier. Sorry to have gone on so long there, these are all things you could learn for yourself if you are interested and give these hooks a try. Quote
