Super User flyfisher Posted July 15, 2015 Super User Posted July 15, 2015 Finally found a semi decent jet ski trailer for a good price, $220, and with a title to begin my conversion into a kayak trailer. It will be set up for just the one boat for now but if i need to take out another one I can always stack them together. The plan is to strip it down, get rid of the rust mostly surface rust, prime & paint, repack the hubs and put some sort of visibility poles on the back because i can't see the dang thing behind the jeep at all. I will need to replace the rear cross member and figure out the lights cause they aren't working but that is pretty easy stuff and get a spare. If i can keep the total monetary investment under $500, which i think i can, it will be a good deal for sure. Anyways here is the start of the fun... 3 Quote
boostr Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 Right on! I'll be subscribing because loading and unloading my yak from the roof rack of my Explorer is getting a little taxing. Quote
Jim Mac Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 Very good deal. When I was looking for a used jet ski trailer, the prices were ridiculousy high. Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted July 17, 2015 Author Super User Posted July 17, 2015 Started removing rust today and things are going well. Hopefully have it stripped and painted this weekend and then repack the hubs and fix the lights and get it registered next week Quote
Hanover_Yakker Posted July 17, 2015 Posted July 17, 2015 You need to set it up for two, so I can strap mine on there and go fishing together Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted July 17, 2015 Author Super User Posted July 17, 2015 You need to set it up for two, so I can strap mine on there and go fishing together I plan on adding some cross bars on the top in phase two that will allow for at least two kayaks Now i just need to learn to back this short thing up....can't see it behind me in he jeep at all, so visibility poles are definitely in order Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted July 21, 2015 Author Super User Posted July 21, 2015 Just a few more pics....got the rear cross member removed and the new one ready to be installed. I still need to prep and primer that before final mounting. I also had to chop off about 3-4" off the back of the trailer because it was pretty rusted after i removed the crossmember. I already repacked the bearings so they are ready to go. Pretty much all that is left is-attach rear crossmember-paint-wire up the lights-reinstall fenders-reinstall winch-reinstall tongue-install some sort of visibility bars-install bunks -repaint wheels (probably will wait on this one) Should be done by this week and then i will get the registration and hopefully give it a whirl this weekend on it's inaugural trip. 2 Quote

But we all know that the final details always take longer than anticipated. Quote
Hurricane Posted July 25, 2015 Posted July 25, 2015 Nice! I am going to attempt to build a rack In the back of my truck.. 14 foot canoe with a 6 foot bed..figured it would be easier to load and unload.. Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted August 2, 2015 Author Super User Posted August 2, 2015 well, she is pretty much done. I am going to have a rack built at some point that will sit up above the bunks and allow me to use it for occasional utility use and carrying multiple kayaks if needed. Gonna get it registered tomorrow and see how it does. I also need t decide if i want to put on the winch at the front or not because it will take some modification if i want to use it along with redoing the wheels on the trailer but i figure that can wait for a little while. 1 Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted August 2, 2015 Super User Posted August 2, 2015 Looks good - enjoy the "trailering experience" ! Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted August 3, 2015 Author Super User Posted August 3, 2015 Backing up the thing is a beast, especially since i can't see it at all. I have a pole on order that should be here next week. Luckily i have a big driveway so i just pulled it straight in and then turned it around in the driveway. It will take some practice for sure but all in due time. Hopefully this week i can test it out. Quote
