CJIII Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 I sold my Abu 4600 round baitcasting reel, I thought I could use these for bass fishing but they are heavier and bulky to cast all day. So I am looking at getting a low profile baitcaster or a high dollar spinning gear! I might get the Shimano Stella STL2500HGSFI or the lightweight Shimano Aldebaran ALD51HG baitcaster, which would you pick? I leaning toward the spinning reel. Quote
masterbass Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 Just my opinion, but I don't spend that much on spinning reels because I prefer bait casters. It sounds like you're looking for something to throw lighter stuff. I have no experience with the aldebaran 51hg, but have heard some mixed reviews. I almost bought one, but opted to stick with my 51e with avail spool, pixzilla and pxl r, so I'm set on finesse bc. Maybe someone else with experience can chime in on the aldebaran. In the end it all depends on what you want to use the reel for and your preference for type. If you're leaning towards the stella, I'd say go for it. As long as you can afford it, I'm sure you'll be very happy. Quote
CJIII Posted July 14, 2015 Author Posted July 14, 2015 I use mostly light lures, I like them 4'' plastic worms with a 1/2 oz to 3/8 bullet weight. 1 Quote

If so, they weigh 1/4oz plus the bullet weight. That's pretty heavy and doesn't require a finesse bc reel. If you're leaning towards the stella than go with it. I use my standard bc reels for that stuff. My finesse reels I use for much lighter stuff. Quote
masterbass Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 It's tough for me advise you on how to spend your money, but there is quite a difference between the 2 reels your asking about: price and spinning vs bc. It all depends on your preference. The biggest piece of advice I can give you is buy from japan because you can get a much better price. Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted July 14, 2015 Super User Posted July 14, 2015 The Stella would be about $500. Since you are looking for a baitcaster or spinning reel why not get two reels for $500. Stradic CI4+ and a Metanium. Both should be around $500 and you don't have to decide either or. Purchase your Metanium from Japan and you are set! 2 Quote
CJIII Posted July 14, 2015 Author Posted July 14, 2015 I will get from Japan, I pefer baitcasting gear but I may give spinning a try for bass. Quote
hawkoath Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 Why the Aldebaran? Is it because it is the lightest reel on the market, because there might be better options around which could weigh an ounce or less heavier. Or is it because you tried it and it palmed better? or some other reason? Quote
CJIII Posted July 14, 2015 Author Posted July 14, 2015 It might be some better choices out there. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted July 14, 2015 Super User Posted July 14, 2015 I use mostly light lures, I like them 4'' plastic worms with a 1/2 oz to 3/8 bullet weight. Definitely b/c weights for me. I have a beautiful MH spinning rod for this type of fishing that doesn't get used simply because I much prefer a b/c set-up whenever possible. An older model Zillion would handle these weights just fine so no need for a finesse type reel. If you are looking for a light reel, I can highly recommend the Pinnacle Primmus. 5.9 oz. of super smooth, factory tuned reel. Casts a 3/8 oz. BD3 Popper the proverbial country mile....like a bullet. Nice looking too. EDIT: However, the reel is for you. If you are leaning towards the spinning reel, then you might wind up regretting a b/c purchase. Buy what interests you. It will bring more enjoyment to the fishing experience for you and that is what is most important, imo. Quote

I've been looking around, and I'm not finding much more competitive pricing. Quote

The Stella if you are going with light weight baits. What rod are going to pair it with? Hopefully something that is equally as awesome. Quote
CJIII Posted July 15, 2015 Author Posted July 15, 2015 Might try a St Croix Legend Bass Tournament. Quote

Its not a JDM reel it's available all over the U.S market and is the same price as ordering one from TW which would give you free shirts and what not. If it matters to you, ordering from TW would also benefit an American company. Quote
CJIII Posted July 15, 2015 Author Posted July 15, 2015 Oh I see that Tackle Warehouse has the same model thanks for telling me. Quote
