Ethan14014 Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 I'm having a tough time catching fish from the banks of lakes during the summer. Can anyone give me some advice on where and what to fish to get some bites? 1 Quote
tater555 Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 I have been fishing alot of ponds here in eastern nc, and have been catching them in the deeper sections using a Texas rigged 10" culprit worm in red shad or crankbaits. And believe it or not, I have also caught them pretty good on hard jerkbaits. But if you can't find any deep water, look for any shaded areas (over hanging trees, docks, Lilly pads etc) and fish them with a jig or soft plastic. Good luck! Quote
Super User buzzed bait Posted July 15, 2015 Super User Posted July 15, 2015 Lots of different types of water to fish in NC, what part of the state are you in and where do you fish the most (pond, lake, river, etc.) Quote
Ethan14014 Posted July 15, 2015 Author Posted July 15, 2015 I've been fishing Badin lake and High Rock lake mostly and a couple smaller local ponds but I seem to be able to get a decent amount of fish from the ponds I just can't get any from the lakes Quote

If you cover enough water, you should be able to find some shallow fishing, but you probably can't get to most of the deep hangouts. 1 Quote

Can anyone give me some advice on where and what to fish to get some bites? Yes alot of the fish have moved deep esp the bigger gals.. but there are still alot of fish in the shallows.. ALOT Maybe smaller but alot! My advice to you.. fish like a ninja! Sneak up to the bank camo'ed and silent.. cast with your background being the woods. Esp during the summer on the banks.. that imo is one of the major factors.. often times the fish are right along the banks in 1-2 ft of water and scurry away when you step on a twig. 1 Quote
Ethan14014 Posted July 17, 2015 Author Posted July 17, 2015 Thanks a lot. What should I throw to catch these shallow fish? Quote
tater555 Posted July 18, 2015 Posted July 18, 2015 I would try working a weightless fluke just below the surface. start with a pretty fast erratic retrieve, reeling steadily and shaking the rod tip at the same time. This will make the fluke dart all over the place just below the surface and it looks like a bait fish trying to run for his life. If that doesn't work out, cast it out and try fishing it like a senko. Let it flutter down to the bottom (on slack line), pop it up with a couple of twitches and let it sink again. You have to pay close attention to your line when the bait is falling, since your line is slack you won't feel the bite but you will be able to tell if you watch your line. Quote
einscodek Posted July 18, 2015 Posted July 18, 2015 Thanks a lot. What should I throw to catch these shallow fish? Depends on the structure on the shallows and the conditions and the season. The banks have various structures.. weeds, sloping descents and steep dropoffs out into open water, sunken wood in various depths.. and if you are able to rip long casts you can reach the edges of deeper waters. Alot of baits can be used it really depends on the location, time, and conditions. Improve your bass knowledge in general. As a start, it wouldnt hurt to fish finesse.. small plastic minnow lures like keitechs and small spinnerbaits 1/4oz worked slow are imo all-season & should get your confidence going and catch you a ton of small fish. If you have weedy shores, grab a small hollowbody frog and learn to work it in the weeds and edges. Quote
