Guntarn Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 Hi everyone! My name's Daniel, I've been a visitor/lurker on this site for about 2-3 weeks now. I've read a lot of great information here in articles and forum posts. I've greatly enjoyed seeing how many people are willing to share their knowledge and opinions with others here. I'm very excited to get a few questions I have answered, and continue reading as many forum posts and articles as possible. As far as fishing goes I'm probably about as green around the gills as it gets. I've gotten 'into' fishing after recently moving to North Carolina from Arizona and found Lake Crabtree about 10 minutes from my house. I'm also quite excited to try fishing at Falls Lake & Wake Forest Reservoir once I move a little closer that direction. First fishing story: --- I got interesting in learning to fish after visiting Lake Crabtree to explore the local park and see what it had to offer, during my visit I observed another guy fishing from a deck and reeling in fish after fish, getting bites 3-5 seconds after throwing his lure into the water just feet from where he was standing. Genuinely curious and interested I asked the guy how on earth he was having such great success. He shared a bit of knowledge with me that the fish he was catching were Crappies and they were actually spawning just underneath the deck that he was fishing from, and he showed me that he was just using something called a jig (I honestly wondered at the time if the guy really didn't know what his lure was called; or if he just didn't want to tell me ). I watched him pull over 20 fish out of the water in under 10 minutes and decided that I was going to give it a whirl the next day and see what came of it. Zoom... off to a Bass Pro Shops less than 10 minutes from that very lake I picked up myself a 4ft.6' rod and reel combo they call the "Crappie Maxx" and some of these weird looking jigs and bodies. That next morning I was at the park when it opened at 8 AM and went to go ahead and tie on a jig thingy and realized, holy crap I don't know what I'm doing ! A 3-minute YouTube video later, and I had sorta tied this jig to the line and successfully poked myself in the finger with the hook. 2 more YouTube videos later and I figured out how to cast with a spinning rod/reel. All of maybe 3 seconds after my jig hit the water I had a fish hooked somehow, and it was trying to rip this rod out of my hand. I surely looked like a complete idiot trying to figure out what to do with it now that I had caught it. I knew I had to get the hook out of it's mouth but I was NOT about to put my fingers in it's mouth not knowing if it had teeth or not . I'm not sure who was scared more, me or the fish. After a good 45 seconds or so I managed to get the hook out and safely release the fish. First thing I did after catching my first fish... Google'd if Crappie had teeth or not . Don't worry, I'm a lot less scared of Crappie now! --- Anyhow that's pretty much it! I'm very interested in acquiring a MUCH better rod and reel for bass fishing! I've been doing a lot of reading around these forums and I'm doing my best to figure out what kind of bass fishing I'm interested in so that I can make an educated purchase of a casting rod and reel in the near future. I am quite confused as to how rod length is determined, I'm on the taller side of average at 6'3 and was wondering if this makes any difference on rod length. Thanks for reading, & Thanks in advance for any responses or links to articles to my above question regarding rod length! Daniel 1 Quote

Super User A-Jay Posted July 13, 2015 Super User Posted July 13, 2015 Hello Daniel and Welcome to Bass Resource ~ As for a tackle recommendation, there's a ton of good info here and the BR forum membership is always very willing to offer their advice on what THEY LIKE & why. That's where it ends and you take over. By going to your local tackle shop, asking questions, holding the gear in your hands to see what feels right to you, you can definitely get a quality, suitable & matched set-up. Good Luck A-Jay Quote
