smr_hga Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 I am still trying to catch one of those darn Grass Carp that live in my pond. Today i caught them feeding close to the bank and threw my wieghtless corn rig out there but no luck once again. I used a circle hook with no wieghts or anything and covered it completely with corn. I even got it right in their face a couple times but they didn't even seem to notice it. I've tried bread as well but i can't get it to stay on the hook. So what's the catch? (No pun intended) Quote

CeeJay Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 Bow n arrow. I actually first learned about carp (and why they should be respected) from a bow-fisher years ago when I began fishing. He would stalk the carp much like someone sight fishing for them with a fly rod. LiftedSquare - In-Fisherman lists cherry tomatoes as an underrated bait for Grass Carp. http://www.in-fisherman.com/carp/carp-baits/ 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted July 13, 2015 Global Moderator Posted July 13, 2015 Bowfishing is by far the easiest way to get a grass carp. Small cherry tomatoes and pieces of cattail stalk are the best baits I've found for them. They can be taken fly fishing as well. I've caught one on a wooly bugger. If you can find a Mulberry tree dropping fruit then you have a very good chance at catching one under the naturally chummed area. They'll also eat cottonseed which is a good time to try to fly fish for them with small, white, puffy dry flies. 2 Quote

Super User Deleted account Posted July 13, 2015 Super User Posted July 13, 2015 I don't know about best, but I've done well with canned peas and dough balls with a hint of vanilla. Never heard of using cattail stalks, gonna give it a try. 1 Quote

MG-70 Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 Never seen one of those, but around here, I've found dough to be the best bait for common carp. You can find recipes for making the dough online. Europeans, especially Brits, go ga-ga for carp, and have all sorts of specialized gear for catching them. There are some good vids on youtube. Make sure you have plenty of line on the reel! 2 Quote

Make sure you have plenty of line on the reel! haha that is true First carp I ever hooked ended up spooling my cheap Zebco underspin reel I was using when I first started fishing (summer of 1996). The second carp I hooked did the same. The third didn't spool me, but broke off as I chased it around the lake I tripped over some rocks and my line went taut... SNAP went the 10 pound test mono. It was then that I finally decided to research them more and upgrade my tackle. I didn't have the internet at the time, but I purchased a European book called "The Complete Book of Sportfishing" that described various techniques and I adapted the info to my home lakes and ponds. Great book by the way, I still have it. 1 Quote
