I have an opportunity to pick up a Loomis Bronzeback SMR813C-SP(6'9" Casting Med.-Heavy Fast action 10-17lb. 1/4-3/4 Jig specific technique) for a good price and was wondering how this rod would be for fishing 3/8-5/8 oz. walking baits, poppers, propbaits and jerkbaits? Too stiff perhaps? I do want a fast action. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.

It wouldn't be my first choice, but you could try it... I would probably use it for Spinnerbaits personally

Not my first choice either but I can get it for such a good price. The Cdn.$ is killing us up here right now.

Then go for it! If you find you don't like it for that purpose, you could always assign it a different task or sell it.

To me, you can't go wrong having several rods with those specs.  If you can get it for a good price, get it.   I'm sure you can find some use for it, or sell it.

The Bronzeback rods are very nice and have a surprising amount of backbone, however the tips remain very versatile and can accommodate a wide variety of baits.  If it were me I would give it a try.  The worst that can happen is you end up with a nice rod for another set of techniques.

Thanks guys. I'm going to give it a try for topwater this weekend. Right now I'm using a Shimano Clarus  7' crankbait rod for topwater and it's not doing the job.

I'll tell you exactly what you don't want to hear, and that is they make a jerkbait/topwater deal in the bronze back series, the tip section on that rod isn't soft by any means. You can get the rod but what you'll find is you have a jig, worm, and spinnerbait rod, throwing a treble hook jerkbait or spook type bait will catch you some fish but I'll bet you all your tackle that you'll get frustrated at how many fish you lose compared to how many you land and the breaking point will be when you have a toad on the line and it comes off half way to the boat. I have a jerkbait series rod, and I looked at a few others and one thing I can tell you is when Loomis makes a rod for a specific purpose, it is going to be used for little else. I liked the bronze back rods when they came out but I went with the mag bass IMX rods because of the versatility, and I'm saying that to you, it is your money, do what you want but if you really don't want another jig/spinnerbait rod, then don't buy it because that is what it will be and any illusions of loosening the drag or light line to compensate is going to go out the window when you handle that rod but if you think you can use it then be my guest.

Well, my 893C JWR isn't much good for anything other than- you guessed it- jigs and worms.

I do like a fast action for jerkbaits and topwaters though.

Well you already know that I don't like using a 7'5" rod for that kind of stuff...LOL!!! I looked around and think you are the only person using a rod that long for jerkbaits...LOL!!!

Nope, I like both my Helium3 (with fluoro) and a BPS Cranking Stick (with braid) for jerkbaits. Both are 7'6" though.

Actually I fished a little this morning from the banks; a Sammy 100 on the BPS rod, and a 112MR pointer on the Kistler. Caught fish too.

Can I fish jerkbaits on the Loomis? Absolutely. But not if either of the other two rods are free.

Actually it's what I wanted to hear. I appreciate your candidness. I'm going with a topwater/jerkbait technique specific rod. Thank you.
