i made this shad because one of my friends said he had an automotive clearcoat and he wanted to see how good it would work on a lure. so he told me to make a lure with simple paintjob that i will be able to fish a lot and give the clearcoat a thorough test. he also will not tell me what clearcoat he sprayed until i have tested the crap out of this lure.....its frustrating lol.

as for the actual clearcoat, its not very glossy at all, which i'm kinda disappointed in. its more of a semi-gloss or maybe even a satin finish. its also not hard to the touch like epoxy, but he said it won't be fully cured for a few days. after that he said it should be hard as a rock.

so i'll give this clearcoat a shot, see how it works, and if i end up liking it after its all said and done, he can get it for me at a good price and i can either have him spray it or i can dip it myself.

here's the bait:

this little guy crawled up next to me when i was taking those photos:

another friend told me to make him a 1" junebug popper. i said ok, i should have it done by tomorrow.

so i whipped this up out of pvc and painted it with nailpolish, as close to junebug as i could get:

showed him the picture today and it turns out he wanted a popper that imitates a junebug (the insect), not a junebug colored popper ;D so i'm keeping the popper for myself and i'll carve him up a floating beetle with a popping face.

thus concludes the past week in my lure making escapades.... :)

Haha.  That's funny.  A junebug colored popper, or a junebug popper would both work great.  Looks good, as always!

Either you have some gigantor hands or that is a teeny popper.

lol micro-popper = 1"

Is that 2 hook eys I see on that 1" popper :)

sure is lol. my stainless steel wire was making the bait sit too low in the water, so i just used hook eyes as the hook hangers. if i was making the bait for myself, i would have only put one hook hanger on it, but my friend wanted two.

Hmmmm.... Do they even make hooks small enough so 2 could fit on that bait without tangling with each other.

I'm not knocking your bait at all... it's pretty cool but i'm with you, if it were my bait I'd want just one hook.  Keep up the good work!   :)

looks like they MIGHT have a chance at tangled, but they might not. i should have spaced them out a little more, but i wanted to concentrate the weight as far to the rear as i could get away with. lol its not like it makes any difference, i'll probably never end up using this stupid little thing ;D

well the 4 inch shad has a great swimming action! i was very pleased with it. its got a real aggressive, zig-zagging, searching/fleeing action on the retrieve. it wakes the surface very nicely. on the puase it sinks about 1 foot per second and when twitched has a really good injured look.

sorry for this crappy video, photobucket made it worse, but it shows the zig-zagging nicely

fish approved :)
