AmericanMade Posted July 11, 2015 Posted July 11, 2015 Hi guys, new member here. I have been ocean and bay fishing my entire life. I just moved from the coast to a small mountain town with tons of great bass fishing lakes. I've been going every weekend and have landed some monsters. Now I'm obsessed. All I have are heavy action rods with spinning gear that I've always used, I just threw some 8 lb mono and its been doing the trick but I want to invest in a lighter rod with a bait caster. I want to keep it under 200$ for the setup, any good recommendations? I'm right handed but will get a left handed reel. That's how I've always fished. Anyways here is a picture of a nice fish I recently caught, I estimated it to be around 8 lbs, it was 25 inches long with a thick belly, the picture doesn't do it justice. I was fishing early today from the bank and had an even bigger one, biggest bass I've ever seen. I had him at my feet and he swam under a branch and broke the line, now Im really excited to get into this. Thanks! 2 Quote

d-camarena Posted July 11, 2015 Posted July 11, 2015 Nice, for around $200 you can get a falcon bucoo rod and a shimano citica. Great set up and real light. Good luck catching those monsters Quote
bassh8er Posted July 11, 2015 Posted July 11, 2015 Bass Pro Pro Qualifier is a great reel for $100 and is often on sale for $80 and even cheaper during the Spring Classic. Lots if good rods in the $100 range. I've used the St. Croix Mojo and Premier, Abu Garcia Veritas and BPS Johnny Morris Carbonlite with good success but like the Veritas the best. Quote

AmericanMade Posted July 11, 2015 Author Posted July 11, 2015 Thanks for all the replies. I'm actually gonna go with a spinning reel for now. I've mostly been fishing texas rigged plastics and I'm gonna stick with that since I've been having some good luck. I was thinking the abu Garcia veritas 2 spinner with an orra s reel. Also, yeah I feel like a ****** for keeping that bass. It was my first big one and wanted to eat it, it was delicious but I don't keep them anymore. I've caught about a dozen since then and released them all. The lake I fish is huge though and I know a lot of people do keep them Quote

I would recommend the 7'1" MH with a 7.1:1 reel in that case. 14lb Trilene XT or 14 lb Sunline Sniper would be good for this application. I don't know much about spinning outside of either a 6'6" Medium with a Quantum reel with 8lb XL I use for general "finesse", and saltwater setups. And as for keeping your fish, its ok! I catch and release simply because I fish many places that are catch and release only, and don't like the taste of fish. I don't believe in shaming people who keep fish. Most people believe keeping smaller fish is good for fisheries, but obviously not all regulations allow for keeping fish below 14". Goodluck and welcome to the forums! Quote
