Im using 30lb braid on all my baitcasters because I like the way it casts. Just recently I've had a couple fish throw a crankbait and was wondering if a mono leader should be used for more forgivenes?

Interesting question. I'm not sure if a leader would give you enough stretch for a good hook set are not. Honestly I'd probably leave a rod with fluorocarbon still on it. If you don't like dealing with flouro you could try a copolymer.

I can pull small trebles out with 12-14lb mono on a 6-8 m action rod. I don't ever really set the hook when fishing a treble, I find fish tend to hook themselves.

It could also be your technique while fighting the fish, and I am not assuming that is the case. But that is a factor, just did not want to over look a possibility. It can be hard to keep a jumping fish hooked up.

You could start with a mono leader, and experiment with different lengths, the longer the more stretch. You could back off on the drag and let that provide a cushion too.

To be honest your best bet is using floro or even mono over braid. If you like the braid a leader is the second best option, followed by loosing the drag, and lastly trying to play the fish more then land the fish.

You have a few options, play with them all and pick the one you like the best. Hope next time you get to lip that fish!

If you have an extra reel, try spooling it up with straight fluoro.  I have my crankbait reel spooled with 20lb Sniper FC and tie direct to the lure.  Also if you have extra funds maybe look into a glass rod which will have the extra give of a soft tip when the fish tries to throw the lure.

Yeah I think I probably horsed the fish in a little too much so that didn't help.. I think just loosening the drag and playing em a little longer will be good.

Always a mono or fluoro leader with braid. Heck, since I use Seaguar Tatsu Fluoro, I use 10 pound p line fluoro leader since I crank sharp rip rap and rough stuff, so when the line gets abraided I just shorten the leader till I have to tie another. This way I don't waste line.
