Hopslam Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 I'm new to the forum and have been looking for a 7ft M or MH spinning rod in the $120 range. I have searched the forum and it seems the Fenwick HMX, Mojo Bass, *** 13 Black, and Veritas 2.0 get a lot of praise. I'm curious, which rod would be most suitable for all lures, senkos, square bills, spinnerbaits, and frogs? Thanks! Quote
kschultz76 Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 Welcome to the forum, hopefully you learn a lot and don't go broke. Sorry to say though that the techniques you've listed are 3 different rods for me, and the only technique there I throw on spinning gear is the Senko. For me a favorite all purpose spinning rod is my St Croix Avid 6'6" M/F though and could throw the Senkos, small little cranks, the really small pond spinnerbaits, and smaller top water poppers. My favorite spinning rod so far is my St Croix Legend Xtreme 6'8" M/XF but it's a bit more specialized in my view. If you're looking for a good deal St Croix has their Rage rods on sale for $99 each in their Bargain Room online which are built using the same graphite material as the Avid but made in Mexico and use a different handle design and guide train. It's a step above the Mojo in their product line if you can deal with the handle design. I throw squarebills, spinnerbaits, and frogs all on casting gear. I can and do use the same rod for squarebills and spinnerbaits. Frogging is done on a heavier rod though. Hope that helps! Quote
d-camarena Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 Cabelas tourney trail with a pfleuger president will get the job done Quote
Super User Maxximus Redneckus Posted July 10, 2015 Super User Posted July 10, 2015 U can do it all with a 1 spinning rod except deep crankin and froggin.3 spools 1 with braid 30lb 2 with mono 6 and 10 lb test.a 6'6" m action fast will do the trick add a pfleuger president size 30 and you can cover 95% of bass fishing the other 5% is specialty stuff that IMO is just fishing . 1 Quote

BASSPATROL247 Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 I used to fish with one or two spinning rods and you can do it all with one rod and catch fish,i did. Its not gonna be your best bet with certain techniques but it can be done, it helped me to try to use lighter baits sometimes and the only thing that it may not work much at all for is deep cranking but i assume your bank fishing so that wont come into play very often..a good 7' m or mh that has decent backbone and a mod-fast to fAst tip is what i would geg if i were you... Super User SirSnookalot Posted July 10, 2015 Super User Posted July 10, 2015 Best is subjective, I don't use any of the aforementioned rods and I'm more than content with what I use. I have 3 spinning rods I use the majority of the time, light, ml and med powers, all would be considered fast tip. I match the rod to the water conditions and the lure weight, not the style of the lure. IMO the important factor is knowing YOUR rod, not all companies mediums for example fish exactly the same. 1 Quote
wytstang Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 I fish with only 2 rods and both are spinning. 1 7'M rod with a moderate tip (Denali rod $99) for any lure using treble hooks and the other is a 7' MH rod with a fast tip (just bought a Fenwick Elite Tech 4th July sale $127) I'll use for what ever I feel like (except frog). I fish from the bank so having 5+ rods is just not an option. I do just fine with these 2 types of rods off the bank. Edit: Because of the square bill you may want (or may not) look into buying a second rod with a moderate tip for throwing lures with treble hooks. Quote
Super User fishballer06 Posted July 10, 2015 Super User Posted July 10, 2015 I'm not sure where you saw the Fenwick HMX getting praise... The HMG however, is a great rod and well worth the $10 extra over the X. Quote
kschultz76 Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 I'm sure with the right spinning rods the OP could cover those techniques, but not sure 1 all purpose spinning rod will do it all well for them. Quote

Agree ... If you had to go with 1 spool then fill it with braid and add leaders using a braid to fc leader as needed. Quote
The Fisher Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 I have a St Croix Premier 7' fast that I use for 4" weightless Senkos, soft Swimbaits like Keitech or Zoom, small 1/8 oz jigs and light TX Rigs. I paired it with a Shimano Sahara, 6# AN40 copolymer and it casts a mile. Quote
cbass12 Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 The 6'10" M/XF that St Croix makes is about the closest thing I have to an "all around" rod. I have the Rage and Legend Tournament. It's a shakyhead rod but does well with wacky rigs, Ned, small swimbaits, and could probably work for drop shot if necessary. Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted July 10, 2015 Super User Posted July 10, 2015 This reminds me of the old Zen Koan, where the impatient man goes into the pottery shop, and inquires of the potter - "I'd like to purchase your finest pottery." The potter, with a wave to the right and the left, indicating the dozens of pottery pieces lining the shelves says, "Take your pick." Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted July 10, 2015 Super User Posted July 10, 2015 Depending on the wights of baits you throw, either a medium power fast action rod or medium heavy power fast action rod. With the frog included, I'd say you want to go with a medium heavy. As far as length goes, you need to find one that's comfortable for you. Personally I prefer a little shorter rod than the norm, where some prefer longer. There's no right or wrong when it comes to that. The other thing is when you're using 1 rod for everything, just remember to back your drag off considerably when using any sort of treble hook lure. It's still not quite as good as a moderate action rod, but it'll get you by and you'll lose a lot less fish that way. Quote
illinifan4152 Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 I recommend a 7'1 MF *** Black. Great all around spinning rod for the money. Like others have said get yourself a 2500 or 3000 size spinning reel, with 15-20 lb braid and adjust you leaders (flouro or mono) accordingly and you will be able to cover almost all techniques out there. blckshirt98 Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 I've used mostly spinning gear and the one rod that I've caught the most fish on and that I've used 75% of the time is the Phenix M1 MXS72M. Paired with a 2500 sized Shimano reel with 15lb braid I've used it for senkos, dropshot, c-rig, t-rig, spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, squarebills/crankbaits, lighter jigs, in both freshwater and the surf. I believe Phenix tested the M1 blanks lifting like 20lb weights off the ground so they're Ugly Stik indestructible. If I had to pick one outfit to take with me from my collection, that rod/reel combo would be it. Quote

This is definitely the rod for you guys boating your bass with the rod. Quote
blckshirt98 Posted July 11, 2015 Posted July 11, 2015 Actually it was the Phenix rep that told me this, but, I could be recalling the weight incorrectly. Might have been 15, but I'm fairly certain it was double digits, and, the rod I have I've pulled the s*** out of it trying pull snags free. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted July 11, 2015 Super User Posted July 11, 2015 I'd be a bit dubious of claim lifting 20#, even if possible why I would want do it in the first place. If I had a 20# fish on a rod that size, I'm sure not going to lift it out of the water. Quote
