Milfoil

I have numerous lakes and ponds around my area that are 3-6' deep and the whole lake is covered with milfoil. The milfoil comes 6-12" from the surface. I am not talking about the edges of the lakes and ponds I am talking about fishing the open water where the milfoil comes up almost to the surface..How would you fish this? I've fished weighted Texas rigged worms on heavy gear and weightless senkos with ok success..I've also caught fish on frogs when scum was present on the surface of the water. Thanks

Try working a fluke across the surface.

Shallow cranks like manns baby 1- and wake baits work well.

Get yourself a few Big EZ's or a Skinny Dipper.

Rig with a 5/0 1/4oz keel weighted hook or a 1/16oz pegged nose weight.

Use at least 30# braid on a MH rod.

Throw as far as you can and work it back to you just deep enough to tick the top of the grass and dropping it into every hole you come across.

There will be times you won't put the rod down.

Trying throwing a buzz bait and work it as slowly as you can to just keep the blade spinning. Vegetation like that is what dreams are made of. Lol

I don 't know if this is the type of grass you're talking about but in one of the ponds I fish it's all over the place and some areas right up to the surface where working a buzzbait isn't possible.

A Fluke or T-rigged Senko can be twitched over the tops of the weeds and baits like Speed Worms and frogs and toads are good surface presentations.  The only drawback to using any of those is that the fish have to come to them and there are many conditions under which you will need to go to them.  If you aren't familiar with a punch rig, you need to be.  Millfoil, coontail and a number of other aquatic vegetation are similar to a forest in that there is plenty of room beneath the canopy to move around. You will be surprised at the willingness of the fish to take an offering that makes it down to their 'living room.'  I only discovered just how productive this presentation is this season and I can tell you it is a producer under just the conditions you are faced with.

Papajoe has a great idea with the punching. Buzz baits can be used in the areas where it doesn't quite reach the surface. Plenty of noise to draw the fish out. I haven't used them much but the new Popfrogz and Popshadz from Zman could be an option for you to try as well. Both can be rigged weed less. Frogs can be another option.
