Benjamyn Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 I am looking to get a baitcasting combo. I am new to using this type of reel and I am looking to buy one for under $100. Any recomendations? I was looking at the Abu Garcia silver Max or the Gander Mountian Tournament Baitcasting Reel along with the Vortex rod. Both setups are around $80. Here are some links to the items. Silver Max: http://www.gandermountain.com/modperl/product/details.cgi?pdesc=Abu-Garcia-Silver-MAX-Low-Profile-Baitcasting-Combo-66-Medium&i=449516&r=view&from=grid Gander Mountian Tournament Reel: http://www.gandermountain.com/modperl/product/details.cgi?i=831076#reviewsInfo Vortex Rod: http://www.gandermountain.com/modperl/product/details.cgi?pdesc=Gander-Mountain-Vortex-Casting-Rod-66-Medium-Heavy&i=715771 Any advice is welcomed. Joe H. Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 If I was going to buy a bait casting combo for $100> it would be an abu Garcia vengeance rod and black max reel. Quote
d_rosss Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 Get the vegeance rod by abu garcia and get the black max but dont get the silver max because its basically the something just ten dollars more. I use this combo and it works great i havent lost a fish with it yet and i feel even felt a 12.5 inch pickerel strike my lure Quote

cbass12 Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 nice! Even better. I was wrong....... It's $29 for the black max and $39 for the silver max. Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted July 9, 2015 Super User Posted July 9, 2015 Our local BPS had them, they changed them from black to gray color. You have to be careful with BPS when they do that. They offered an Extreme spin combo this past Christmas at a huge discount-about half price. You could look at it and tell it wasn't the regular Extreme reel or rod. The grips were foam, not cork and the reel plain looked cheaper. Not that there was anything wrong with the combo. But it was a bait and switch aimed at Christmas shoppers, not the reel deal, pun intended. Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted July 9, 2015 Super User Posted July 9, 2015 I was surfing last night and ran across this Mettle combo from Academy. $89. http://www.academy.com/shop/pdp/h2o-xpress-mettle-6-6-mh-baitcast-rod-and-reel-combo/pid-1595203?N=78002898+4294713062 I don't know anything about the rod, but the reel has a rating of 4.7 out of 5 with 72 reviews and has a one piece aluminum frame, 6-pin centrifugal brake. It's a good, all-around ratio of 6.3:1. It's the only metal framed BC reel I know of under that magical $79 mark. Here's the reel by itself: http://www.academy.com/shop/pdp/h2o-xpress-mettle-mt2-baitcast-reel-right-handed/pid-903505?N=274871093+4294713062 Only $59 for a reel on a full aluminum frame! I'm gonna get one next time I get by there. Quote

Hannock Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 Black max and silver max are good starters but if you enjoy the BC's, then you'll be upgrading relatively soon to better gear. Personally I like the Pro Max by Abu. I have the Vengeance rod like others have suggested, but honestly, the Vigilante rod (Walmart only Abu, $35) is my favorite.. Ha Quote
Flippin4Biggins Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 I say get a 50 dollar basspro tourney special which is a great graphite rod(for the money and light weight) and the pair it with a bait cast that isn't junk. I've been punching with the heavy for almost a year and in still amazed at the abuse I've put it through. I also have a 7ft medhvy i pitch into grass and use soft plastics with. I enjoy them a lot. But don't get me wrong I don't use them I tournaments.... I've got better Quote
